FRIDAY, OCTOBER LISTINGS FOR SATURDAY, OCTOBER 26 TO FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 1 Operatic prof He Canada's great dramatic tenor is profiled in Jon Vickers A Man and his Music, the opening presentation of CBC-TV's Musicamera series Wednesday at p.m. Vickers, seen here in the Roman town of Orange, southern France, was also filmed in New York City, London, Montreal, Prince Albert (his Saskatchewan birthplace) and on his farm in southern Ontario in the CBC Vancouver production; interviews with noted opera managers, music conducted by celebrated maestros, Vickers' personal narration and excerpts from some of his most famous operatic roles air contribute to make it a memorable 90-minutes of viewing. SPOTLIGHT Magical experience Richard Harris stars as painter Philip Rhayader and Jennie Agutter stars as Fritha in Paul Galileo's film presentation of The Snow Goose airing tonight on the CTV television network. The story tells of the unexpected involvement of a crippled hunchback artist and a fishing village waif, Jennie Agutter, who brings him a wounded snow goose. Together they nurse the bird to health and it becomes their constant com- panion as they become friends. Then comes Dunkirk. The painter sails off to help rescue soldiers trapped on the beach. The men he rescues tell of his fantastic sailing skill and an apparently charmed life as he plows through the bullets with the great snow goose circling above him like a spirit. Italians value .family One of the most important aspects of life for the Italian is the family. Canadians might find this dedication alien but it is not unusual for four generations of one fami- ly to be living in one place because of a preference to be near the ones they love. The family is just one factor of Italian life that producer Bill Fruet examines in the next episode of the Heritage on the CTV television network. No matter what the hardship or frustration, the family in Italy offers security and solace to its members and the home remains sacred, a place for privacy, not away from anyone but with those closest to them. This dedication is found in Italian life in the smallest, poorest villages, near the sea or moun- tains or in the richest cities of the country. To all alike, the family and privacy is paramount with emotional, financial and mental commitments made by every member. Food conference report A topic of wide concern is the establishment of a world food storage system. It will be on the' agenda of the UN FAO's World Food Conference taking place in Rome, Nov. 5-16. But some countries that can produce a food surplus want guarantees of storage and sales from buying countries said Doug Lower, ex- ecutive producer of CBC-TV's Country Canada series. The Sundays at p.m.-series will produce a full up-to-the-minute report on the conference for the Nov. 17 Country Canada program. It is a most critical conference with 140 countries participating, represented in most cases by their political ministers of agriculture or secretaries of state. For the U.S., Henry Kissinger will attend, as will U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Earl Bute. "There's a fundamental difference in political attitudes among those said Lower. The U.S. stance is that those who want grain should pay for it and store it in anticipation of their future needs. Theirs is a realistic business approach.
