The First Canadian Bank Bank of Montreal 4Smoke-that-thunders9 apt name for Rhodesiari falls By ALAN HARM AN VICTORIA FALLS, Rho- desia (CP) The Africans call, them smoke that thunders. And the name is appro- priate. The huge plume of spray from these mighty falls can, at times, be seen 20 miles away marking the' sky as clearly as a bush fire. The roar of water plunging an av- erage of 304 feet into what ap- pears to be an unholy rent in the earth can also be heard for miles. Expo'74 going out in style SPOKANE Expo '74, hearing the end of its six month run, has stepped up the entertainment schedule to pace the World's Fair toward a rousing finale Nov. 3. "We want die closing days to be remembered for a long said Peter L. Spurney, Expo '74 General Manager. "We're putting in more effort now than for opening day." New attractions are set for the: Opera House, the Coliseum, two free atten- dance amphitheaters on the Expo grounds and in the Folklife Festival, on the bank of the Spokane river.' They fill out a schedule already designed to give fairgoers a good sampling of America's best known enter- tainers Ella Van Clibura (Oct. 25) and Guy Lombardo the Royal Canadians. The falls, on Rhodesia's northwest border with Zam- bia, are little changed from November 16, 1855, when Dr. David Livingstone became the first European to see their magnificence. This has not been acciden- tal. For the falls are the focal point of a 250-square-mile na- tional park and the policy is to leave the area as natural as possible. The mighty Zambezi River is more than a mile wide when it makes its plunge and the falls are actually divided by small islands on the lip into five separate waterfalls. ATTRACT, TOURISTS Of these the Rainbow with a drop of 355 feet, are the. highest, but the most pho- tographed are the. 880-yard- wide Main Falls. The highest known quantity of water to make the plunge is 165 million gallons a minute.. The lowest recorded .flow is 6Vz million gallons. The year- round average is 75 million gallons a minute. The Victoria Falls are the focal point of tourism in Rho- desia. Luxury tourist hotels and a casino cater to the visitors.. Away from this "visitors step into the unchang- ing wilds of Africa. Animals ranging from elephant to deer come down to drink from the Zambezi. In the river hippos and crocodiles are un- challenged kings. Man has inhabited the area around the falls since before the stone age. The present in- habitants, the Tonga people, have been in the area for about 500 years. lit is a nappy hunting ground for the prehistorians and there are many collections of stone implements from the Victoria Falls area in museums throughout the world. The falls are beautiful and frightening at the same time. Man has been provided with a front-row seat from which to view the whole mile and a quarter of the falls. Except at the point of exit of the water through the, 100-yard channel known as the Boiling Pot, it is possible to walk the whole length the falls through the Rain Forest. The Rain Forest is a fascinating part of the falls. A non-stop shower of spray drops into this lush area. The water drips steadily from the plants and forms pools on the ground. The visitor is drench- ed to the skin. The forest is at exactly the same level as the top of the falls on the opposite side of the chasm. There is another viewing point for the falls that shouldn't be missed; At the Eastern Cataract steps have been constructed which lead almost to the base of the falls. It seems the plummeting water will envelop the viewer. Instead, it crashes to the bot- torn of the falls just a few feet away. With all the spray in the air, rainbows abound. Even at night, when the moon shines. Passport Photos Candid Weddings Picture Framing Photo Supplies A. E. CROSS STUDIO Phone 328-0111 710 3rd Ave. S.
