Some small papers are re- ported to be threatened with closure. Erick Haylock, editor of the Industry Journal Paper, warns that the crisis may broaden by the end of the year with magazines and books be- ing printed on lower-grade material and with more words to the page. There are a number of fac- tors causing the shortage, in- cluding the long strike at Canadian newsprint and pulp mills. Also, the British anti- inflation program has kept a tight rein on newsprint prices, encouraging exporting countries, to cater to United States and European markets where the price is more 9 persons killed on foggy road KEARNY, N.J. (AP) At least nine persons were killed and more than 40 injured Wednesday in three major pile-ups and scores of minor accidents on the fog-shrouded New Jersey turnpike, police said. According to a state police spokesman, five persons died in one 22 vehicle crash, which occurred where the roadway passes through this industrial community between Newark and New York. The other four fatalities occurred in two separate pile ups near Secaucus. about two miles north of here Sgt. Joseph Kobus of the state police said the accidents resulted from low visibility caused by the fog mixed with smoke from a week-long swamp fire in the Hackensack meadowlands. Kobus said the series of pile-ups constituted the worst traffic mishap in the history of the turnpike, which opened in 1952. attractive. Now a ban on overtime at Reed International's mill at Gravesend, Kent, has added to the problem. Reed has in- formed customers that plann- ed deliveries will be cut by 20 per cent until further notice. The United Kingdom News- print Users Committee, representing almost all users, urged at a recent emergency meeting that members conserve newsprint by restricting special promotional issues, cutting paging and eliminating special advertising supplements. As a first step, some have already reduced the number of pages.
