Navy flannel has a tradition and was popular years ago for men's jackets. Coco Chanel look inspiration from tile nwn's jackets for one of her own Iliat became almost a Chanel signature, lined in red and with the red showing on the turned-back cuffs. It was among the models shown when she ivcd her saton in i W51. This fall Anne Klein used navy flannel for we of the few knickers scon in the collections. Flannel originated in It was a loosely woven wool- len or worsted cloth, a soft lightweight fabric with a slightly napped surface Today it can be made of wool. cotton or rayon. Flannel is a corruption of the Welsh word for the fabric. Grey has always been a popular color in fashions. Christian Dior once wrote: 1 "Grey is the most convenient useful and elegant neutral color. Lovely in flannel, lovely in tweeds, lovely in wool. And. If it suits your complexion, there is nothing more olcgunl than a wonderful grey satin evening dress." But grey hadn't been Un- loading seasonal color since the 1940s until and twill when both grey and flannel dominated the fashion picture. Or are quasars much closer i to our galaxy in distance and make-up, merely violating the astronomer's long-lime rule of thumb for determining (iis-' tances. the so-called "red shift" phenomenon? Astronomers at the Algonquin Radio Observatory in Algon- quin Park. Ont. and at n smaller radio observatory at Chilbolton. near London, Eng- land, have recently joined to- gether in an experiment to try and uncover some answers to these puzzling questions. And the answers will inevita- bly have a bearing on the broader scientific issues of how our universe was formed and how it is now made up and changing. Using a sophisticated tech- nique called long baseline inter- ferometry, first perfected by Canadians, the astronomers in the two countries are synchro- nizing their two radio tele- scopes to look simultaneously at selected quasars. The technique markedly in- creases the resolution the scien- tists can obtain in studying dis- tant objects. And they hope to be able to detect structures and in particular, changes in struc- tures in the objects they ob- serve during the next year. With long baseline inter- ferometry and by receiving a higher "frequency of radio naves, the scientists calculate i they can detect what is com- parable to seeing a marble in England with a telescope from Canada. Observations will be made si- multaneously of the same source for several days every six weeks. Atomic clocks al each observatory will permit (lie signals to be synchronized. j played back and studied, to see any minute differences in sig- j rials arriving in England and in Canada from the same source. The scientists are particu- i larly interested in studying a phenomenon of quasars ob- served recently by U.S. astro- nomers, who reported observ- ing some quasars expanding at what seemed to he speeds thai are faster than the velocity of light. Such observations make some scientists wonder whether the "red-shift" rule is being applied to quasars as meaning they are very dislanl Some suggest, for example that something other than speed of retreat from the centre of the universe, perhap something in the make-up o quasars, might be responsibl 1 for the shift in spectral lines to wards the red end of optica i spectrum. 1 The firs! observations in (h i experiment took place las i month arid more are schedule i later this month. ADDISCOMBE, England (CT Golfer James Reid reporte< the loss of a gold cuff-link in I club-house but heard nothing f two weeks. A Surrey golfi reports that he th pinned up a notice in the c] bar: "Lost, one gold cuff-lin Will buy. Or sell."
