U of L offers great entertainment bargain By LYNNE VAN LUVEN Herald Family Editor Who says you can't get anything for under a dollar these days? Inflation hasn't yet hit the University of Lethbndge's department of dramatic arts: you can still find an enjoyable evening's entertainment in the U of L drama studio for just a quarter. Wednesday evening's presentation of two one act plays Alice Gerstenberg's "Overtones" and Tennessee Williams' "This Property is Condemned" offered ex- cellent returns on the 25 pen- nies ''admission" charged for the student directed, produc- ed and acted drama. In fact, the small audience got its money's worth, and then some. Most enjoyable of the two plays was a mild comedy of manners set in Manhattan in the 1920's. Directed by David Mann, the play is one of social comment, exploring the deceit and hypocrisy of two women as they flatter each other for ul- terior motives. Duplicity is costumed in politics as polite as possible airs while both women avoid confronta- tion with their "inner selves" Carol Virtue as Harriet defined the role of "cultured lady" a shade too strongly, but employed haughty tone, exaggerated gestures and affected mannerisms to good advantage. Laurie Mann as the inner self, Hetty, gave a striking portrayal of the caged sterility and frustration of Harriet's life. Tricia Matheson as Margaret, the second cultured lady, outwardly prim and proper, inwardly desperate was occasionally too wooden. Nancy Grigg as Inner Self Maggie convincingly wielded gestures and poses. The contrasting costumes of the inner and outer women heightened the play's effec- tiveness In This Property is Condemned, director Bryan Francis has Debbie Rakos and Gysbertus Timmermans carefully sustain a few minutes' idle conversation between an errant schoolboy and a verging on mad girl who's "inherited" all her dead sister's beaux. Ms. Rakos gives a taut per- formance, painting Willie as alternately pathetic and defiant, flaunting her inherited "popularity" with the railroad men while mourn- ing her sister's death "warn't 'like in the movies." Mr. Timmermans' Tom is only raison d'etre for Willie's rambling monologue. The U of L drama department's one acters con- tinue tonight and Friday. Cur- tain time is p.m. in the drama theatre (downstairs, Physical Education Fine Arts If you haven't a quarter, a dime and two nickels will suffice.
