The Mitsui Company at the same time bought Claude Monet's painting entitled "Lady" from the Monet fami- ly for more than ac- cording to a company spokesman The pictures will shortly be displayed at the National Museum of Western Art and eventually in a new Mitsui Art Museum Asked why Mitsui had kept the purchase a secret for so long, a spokesman for the company said, "we did not think it necessary for us to make the matter public He said the company was looking for something good for the projected museum and had considered displaying the paintings in the company of- fices before offering them temporarily to the govern- ment museum Many Japanese companies and individuals have in recent years bought western pain- tings at extremely high prices for investment purposes but not for display Many are hidden away so that the tax of- fice cannot assess taxes on them The Rousseau painting was sold by the Metropolitan around March, 1972, without public announcement But when the sale was discovered six months later there was a stir Thomas Hoving, the director of the museum, justi- fied the sale, however, on grounds that the proceeds would be used to improve the balance of the museum's collection The Mitsui spokesman said that the Marlborough dealers in London had bought the Rousseau Marlborough in turn sold the painting to the Nichido Gallery here, which was acting for the Mitsui Company WALKS OFF JOB NOTTINGHAM.
