Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - October 23, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta 42 THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD Wcdnmday, October 23, 1974 Republican right wing uneasy Woman beats ihe bull Spanish matador Angela Hernandez gestures to bull during performance. WASHINGTON (CP) Cir- cumstances took Gerald Ford out of .Grand Rapids, Mich., and now there are signs of un- easiness in some quarters that other circumstances may be taking Grand Rapids out of President-Ford. For 25 years; Ford sat in Congress and appeared to epitomize the country's pop- ular conception of the district which sent him there a bit stodgy, calvinistic and dull: above all, conservative. .Today, columnists and reporters on Capitol .Hill, together with one or two un- easy segments of the Republican right wing, are speculating on whether Ford is foresaking traditional stands and whether Congressman Ford and, indeed, Grand Rapids itself were somewhat less than stodgy, dull and conservative all along. A possible example of such uneasiness comes from arch conservative Senator James Buckley of New York, who said in a recent speech: The American political future belongs to that party that will first identify itself fully and frankly with the new mood of the American people, and that mood is conser- vative. "I submit, further, that the very future of the Republican oarty depend on the willingness of its leaders to do so." John Berbers, writing in the New York Times, notes a change in Ford in this regard. "His views are not as narrowly partisan as they were when he was a represen- tative for a conservative Michigan he writes. "As a congressman, Ford adamantly opposed amnesty for veterans: as president, he ordered a limited form of amnesty. As a congressman, he refrained from publicly en- dorsing the women's rights amendment: as president, he supports it." Ford, himsef, quoted as saying: has been "Forget the voting record. The voting record reflects Grand Rapids." His nomination of Nelson Rockefeller to be vice presi- dent brought teeth gritting acceptance from some less than liberal Republicans and lately, the president has in- dicated, there have been conservative urgings for him even at this late stage to abandon that choice. It is advice he says he does not intend to take seriously. In addition, there have been reported murmurings of dis- content over Ford's moderate approach in general since he has reached the White House. Look how Sears helps yo Why wait?
