The Rug Drapery Shoppe CALGARY (CP) The number of temporary work permits granted to foreign I workers in Alberta has I increased by 20 per cent in less than a year, says Ellery Post, an officer in the Calgary Branch of the federal immigration department. Accelerating demand for construction tradesmen I and service workers, com- I I bined with full employment I in the province, is the main reason for the increase, he said in an interview. About temporary work visas were issued in 1973 while visas have already been granted in 1974, Mr. Post saidi "We seem to have full employment and, as a result, nearly every re- quest from an employer for a temporary work visa is granted." Temporary work visas, or permits, are issued to non immigrant workers and are valid for a I specified period up to 12 months. Employers have to prove that no Canadian can be found to fill the job vacancy before a permit can be issued. MEXICANS GET VISAS In Calgary visas have been issued to carpenters and bricklayers from the United States to work on construction sites. Visas were issued in August through the Calgary office to 50 Mex- icans to work at Banff Springs Hotel for nine months. Another 32 visas were issued to Mexican workers to work on farms in Southern Alberta. And the building of a ce- ment plant in Exshaw west of Calgary brought in 70 carpenters on temporary work visas from northwestern United States. Mr. Post said many foreign students are issued two or three work visas- each year to work part time between semesters. "This could inflate the figures he said. But despite the increase in temporary work visas, 700 requests for visas have been turned down because immigration officials said Canadians could be found for the jobs. TORONTO (CP) Margaret Trudeau said she was "very frightened" when she entered hospital recently knowing she was classified as emotionally ill. In an interview with Carole Taylor to be aired Sunday on the CTV program W5, Mrs. Trudeau said she did not feel ill at the time. "Our tradition, I guess, is that when we're sick we turn to a doctor." she said. "I didn't feel sick, I just felt very, very weary and emotionally tight'." Mrs. Trudeau said she was a young woman who "prepared myself for my marriage to Pierre Trudeu but didn't pre- pare myself for my marriage to the prime minister." She said she found it dif- ficult to appear calm and im- perturable all the time, when "I get as angry as anybody." Mrs. Trudeau said her fami- ly doctor referred her to a psychiatrist. "I wanted to have a chance to think about things and be away from the strains of household and children and just retreat... sometimes you have to reach out." She said that any Canadian should be able to go to a psy- chiatrist for help and not be ashamed about it. At present, she said, she ac- cepts her life knowing she is loved and needed by her family. Her hospital experience helped her to be better pre- pared for her combined role of ordinary wife and a prime minister's wife, she said. "I didn't marry my husband to be the prime minister's she said. "I long for the day when I no longer will be the prime minister's wife, when I can just be Pierre's wife."
