Get more out of life Take the family to a movie Movie Column Guy Named Joe Oscar Candidate By BOB THOMAS HOLLYWOOD (AP) The Oscar season is fast approach- ing, and one of the prime candi- dates for an acting nomination is a guy named Joe. His real name is Peter Boyle, but he plays the title role in a film called simply, Joe. And does Is play it! A number of the reviews so far have nomi- nated him for Hollywood's big prize. "It's difficult to me to think- said the 34-year-old bachelor. "The Oscars! I've al- ways watched, them on TV. To think that I might. His air of wonderment was hi sharp contrast to his role as Joe. He plays a loud, crudu, bullying tool-and-die maker with a hatred of hippies, blacks, Allied Arts Council Presents homosexuals and others foreim deal fell through, and Boyle was to his culture. His antipathies reconsidered. "I had never really had a good part before, and for the first time I felt more than he said. COSTS WEKE LOW Joe was filmed in New York for less than The happy producers are now pre- dicting a gross of million to million, and the total could go higher. Joe turned out to be timely and prophetic; it de- picted the middle-class revolt and was made before the hard- end in violence. Boyle's achievement as an actor is all the more impressive because he seems the most non-violent of persons. In truth the Philadelphian, born to Irish immigrants, became a Christian Brother while studying at La- Salle College but left the order because he couldn't submit to authority. After navy service, he studied acting in New York, toured in The Odd Couple, with Dan Dai- ley and Dick Benjamin, ap- peared in Chicago's Second City reyue, and starved a little- "that's one reason I never got insecurity." Finally he began to support himself as an actor in TV com- mercials. "That turned out to be great experience for said Boyle. "I learned about cameras and improvising. I also learned about how to handle auditions, which are a large part of an actor's success. I was doing fix to eight auditions a day, and brother that's tough to do." Bovle auditioned for the prod- ucers of Joe, but considered himself too young for the part of a Second World War veteran. The producers seemed to agree and hired another actor.
