Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - October 21, 1970, Lethbridge, Alberta Wednesday, October 21, 1970 THE LETHBRIDGE HHALD 9 Hearing Told CPR Should Cover Rail Loss With Other Profit WINNIPEG (CP) The Ca- nadian Pacific Railway should be made to cover losses in- curred in operation of its rail passenger service from the profits of Us other business ven- tures and not with federal gov- ernment handouts the Canadian transport commission was told here. W. H. Matthew, chairman of the .Prairie Region Railway Union Council, told a one-day committee hearing the federal government should order CP Rail to operate its "vast empire as one empire, and losses from one section should be compen- sated from profits in other sec- tions." If this principle is not applied, "the CP empire should be re- turned to the people of Can- ada." Mr. Matthew told the comiras- sion, headed by J. W. Pickers- gill, that profits from Canadian Pacific freight, express, air- lines, steamships, hotels, real estate and mining should be taken into account before under- writing tlie company's passen- ger-service losses. The commission is holding hearings on CP Rail's applica- tion to reduce the service of The Canadian to three times a week from daily levels and to in- crease passenger fares. H. M. Patterson president of the Winnipeg and District Labor Council, told the hearing "we subscribe to the principle that a percentage of the profits from other interests be used to cover any operation loss that may be incurred by the single operation (passenger service) by the "This means that we are to- tally opposed to the use of pub- lie monies being used to subsi- dize any Canadian railway oper- ation." The commission is to resume its hearings in Thunder Bay, Ont, Thursday. EXTINCT BIUD The extinct great auk for- merly bred on Funk Island, Newfoundland, Iceland, the Far- oes and probably Sweden.
