Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - October 19, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta Turntable topics Stampeders album New Day top rated By MICHAEL ROGERS Herald Staff Writer Stampeders New Day They're talented, ac- complished musicians and they're Canadian. They call R.A. HOSACK Cwttttod DwitaiNtachmlc C DIETRICH DENTURE CUNIC 8uHM 304Sth8t8. Ph. 327-7244 Lethbridge themselves the Stampeders. On New Years' Eve, had the pleasure of listening and dancing to the music of the old Calgary Stampeders at Duffy's in Hamilton, Ontario. They were good then and they just kept getting better with every new number. There were five or six of them then, now there's three and they're better! This trio simply amazes me. It's no wonder the album is so good, with these three guys backed by one of the better producers, Mel Shaw, and recording engineer Mark Smith. Cuts worth mentioning are Running out of Time, Wild Eyes, Words and Brothers Of The Universe. The Stampeders; if they ever changed their name, could go personal Dodson, Berly and King. Has a ring doesn't it? (Music World Creations MWCS 706) Chilliwack Riding High As long as Chilliwack is around music trends in Canada can look to the future. One of the undisputed leaders of Canadian rock music for the last three to four years, Chilliwack always gets the same reaction from people wherever they go. People never seem to tire of their sound witness the many times Chilliwack has visited Lethbridge. Phone 3Z74SM Mt-4474 Riding High shows where Chilliwack is heading now, ever improving, always changing and yet, remaining the same. The LP is great. Since Claire Lawrence left the group, a definite change has taken place. The group isn't so much into spaced out sound anymore, though there will always be that flavor to their sound. Now the music is more in the framework of songs a beautiful improve- ment to their unique sound. (Goldfish GFLP 1003) Sly and The Family Stone Small Talk Thump, thump, thump multilayered voices, horns, guitar and bass always con- stant. music of Sly and The Family Stone is out- rageous, alarming, sensitive, political and just plain good. _ The music on this LP is so diverse, from funk rock in Holdin' On, to soft sound like that in Wishful Thinkin', to a jazz-like sound in Better Thee Than Me one, two, three. But when you get down to it, it's all Motown and its good. N. m an conditioned comfort Status Quo This group is relatively new to me but their music is good, once they get passed the three-cord rock type music and show what they can really do. The first song on side two didn't impress me, but once the needle got by that one the sound improved. Fine Fine Fine and Lonely Man are ex- cellent. The instrumentation is well formed and the har- mony well rehearsed. It will be interesting to hear what Quo comes up with next. (A M SP 3649) Ray Griff -'The Middle Of The Road Griff's music may be called easy listening with commer- cial country flavor. Just how he managed that I don't know but it seems to have gained him a following, and that following is growing. I, for one, don't enjoy com- mercial country music as much as I enjoy the non- commercial tunes by people like Doc Watson, Pete Seeger and several others. Some of the other music Griff has recorded is much better than what is on this LP. Nine of the songs on this album have never before been released on record. Perhaps it should have stayed that way. Most of the songs here are tear-jerking, lost-love; crying mush. A far "cry" from an earlier Griff release, My Rocky Mountain Home. (GRT 9230-1026) Linda'Brown Sing-A-Long With Me She lacks originality, depth, and a voice. The group (no name) that backs her on the album is a good country band they could make it without Linda Brown She's a nice looking girl, but she can't sing as the saying goes. Sing-a-long with me? No thanks. (A M SP 9012) Show Times Saturday.
