Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - October 18, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta Page 7 Yaiiomama boys Thursday, Oct. 24 Meeting Place taught violence Untamed World presents Yanomama -II Sunday on CTV a look at a people calling themselves The Fierce Ones who live in a constant state of violence induced by drugs and male arrogance. The Yanomama live in the unexplored' upland jungles along' the Orbiocco River in South America. Each tribe lives in com- munal fashion in a large circular hut, open at the centre, called a Shabono. The society is decidedly masculine the males hunt, make war and talk with spirits, while women do the menial tasks. Male children receive the most attention, and it is not unusual for females to be killed at birth. Boys are encouraged to be fierce, and taught the arts of violent warfare. The use of drugs and the encouragement of temper and fierceness have led to vindictiveness in the in- dividual and chronic war- fare throughout the society. The inner bark of the wild Ebene tree provides a hallucinogenic drug, taken regularly, which keep the warriors in, contact with their Hekura the spirits and demons of the jungle.
