OCTOBER 19 TO FRIDAY, OCTOBER 25 The Head, Guts and Sound Bone Dance A powerful drama from the Canadian theatre, The Head, Guts and Sound Bone Dance, by Michael Cook, Is the premiere presentation of CBC-TV's Opening Night, for telecast Wednesday at p.m. In this scene from the play, set in Newfoundland sometime in the future, Gerard Parkes (left) as Skipper Pete, an old fishing boat captain, is confronted by Dick Buehler as his son Absalom, hodlng the body of a dead child. The Head, Guts and Sound Bone Dance is the first CBC-TV drama to be taped in St. John's, Newfoundland, where It was first staged. Buehler is a St. John's actor, and the play is by a Newfoundland playwright. SPOTLIGHT Canadian championship Nominations for entry into the Canadian Inter- national Championship Race from Woodbine, airing October 27 on CTV have included some of the top horses from around the world. To date this list includes, Dahlia, the French Champion, the first filly to win over a million dollars; Snownight, winner of the Epsom Derby, Holding Pattern, top U.S. three year old; plus Big Spruce, winner of the Marlboro Cup. Contenders for the added purse also include entries from Ireland, England and Ger- many. Open to three year olds and up, the mile and five furlong race is to be run on the Marshall Turf. Host Fergie Olver follows the excitement as Daryl Wells calls the race. Hugh Hefner's kingdom This evening, CTV presents The World of Hugh Hefner, a one-hour documentary special-on the man and the idea that started the Playboy magazine and turned a 600 dollar investment into a 200 million dollar empire known throughout the world. The Playboy bunny has become a symbol recognized by millions. The publisher and the magazine are advocates of the enjoyment of life and the pursuit of pleasure. Throughout this world, there is an aura of fan- tasy come to life as business, parties and pleasures become inseparable in a hedonistic paradise. The program examines Hefner and his business, following him as he travels, works and parties. The show also looks at the background and phenomenal growth of the Playboy magazine and the Playboy Foundation. Arbitration examined The arbitration process in labor management disputes in Australia is subject of the Sunday afternoon CBC television series Payday, Oct. 20 at 1 p.m. Australia has used the arbitration process for 70 years and it was until-recently the only process used to settle industrial disputes issues in that country. Now however, there is much evidence that the arbitration process is breaking down and the program shows, film oi a strike meeting where technical school teachers voice their displeasure with a system which precludes them even from the arbitration process. Many Canadians are advocating the adoption of the compulsory arbitration process in this country. On the other hand, the Australians are beginning to adopt our system of collective bargaining. School telecast resumes Making its 15th seasonal debut on CBC-W, Canadian School Telecasts in 1974-75 wilt offer a new four-part Canadian history series, a special repeat presentation of a Shakespearean play, and returning mini-series ranging in topic from native peoples to basic photography.
