Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - October 18, 1972, Lethbridge, Alberta 1H6 U1HBRIDGE HERALD October 18, 1972 Is Nixon waging nothing but a television spectacular? By KVSSKI.l. New York Timi'S Service WAillliW'ON Those per- tons who pcrsii-lcnly fault Pres- ident Nixon for refusing to dis- cuss the issues this fall are missing the point. The presK'.'nl is not waging im election campaign. lie is waging a tclev is i o n show. lii television shows, issues arc rarely, if ever, discussed. The possibility of waging an issue show was discussed at the White House before the fall TV season hegan, but it yvas The advertising men who fill so many important White House positions cautioned Pres- ident Nixon not to do it. They reminded him that whenever anybody tries to dis cuss issues on television Vice I'rcsiiVjnl Agnew becomes fur- ious and sets off a public out- rai'e ngainsi the offender. With an election coming up in November, they told t li e president, it would be a mis- take to arouse the vice presi- dent's hostility. Actually. Nixon was never enthusiastic about doing an issue show. His favorite televi- sion is football, and he very much wanted to do a football show. This idea was scrapped nfter a sweaty afternoon on the White House lawn in which be was able to complete only two of 17 passes for a gain of onlv six yards. The show that has finalK emerged is the big-speolacte reminiscent of the "spectacu lans" of television in the 1'jiseu- lower era. This was the type of show all blanoncss ami in with aetors costumed as soap which led Fred to characterize television "chewing gum for the eyes." The rncsl difficult problem in preparing the show was to find someone to play the president. An actor from Boston who bore a startling p b y s i c a 1 resem- blance to Nixon was tried ou! for the role at the Republican convention in Miami but he was unsatisfactory. On the night of the show in which was to be embraced on national television by Sammy Davis Jr., he lost his courage, drank six martinis am: somehow escaped bis Secret Service guards. "but vcr.i'rc going to come bnck a star.1' For a wlu'le tlin president was so buoyed by Ills Florida success that he wanted to play himself for the entire campaign. His advisers were able to talk him out of this by pointing ovit that the day of the amateur performer in politics was dead. McGovern, they said, had tried to get away with playing himself. Look where it had Nobody iu the present ape of media politics could ho'ie to wage winning television shows w i t h o ut an all professional mrdia cast. In the end the president approved (lie rusting of Vinnic Satchsayer, who made the famous prize winning series commercials in 1955. Satclnvaycr does not look much like Present Nixon, This is cue reason the reporters ate always kept out of the rooms in which he speaks to financial contributors, p a r t y agents and extras hired to play strike ST. There is another quite sensible reason for excluding reporters, of course. They project a rump- led, fatigue image which would damage the cKecl of Satchsay- cr's performances, The White House has offered to let actors play the reporters' roles in sev- eral of the bigger show's still to come, hut (he niggling about costs refuse to pay actor's equity scales. Last week's performances, In which Satclisaycr met at the White House with Irving Mac- Leod who plays the vita lienry Kissinger role was television at its most tempting. It was difficult not to bclievo hat something had really been on in Paris, that Macleod really had sonu'lliing interest- ing to impart to Satcb.sayer.
