Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - October 17, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta Friendly Giant thrice daily Wtdnmday, October 17, 1973 THE LETHBRIQE HERALD TV nightmare for northern viewers YELLOWKNIFE, N.W.T. (CP) The frustration of ex- periencing technical in- terference in the middle of a favorite program seems mild compared with the situation facing television viewers in the north. The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. is treating them to the National News twice a night, the Friendly Giant three times a day, children's shows as early as 6 a.m. and such in- cidents as the Walt Disney show which one week lost 20 minutes of its program. On tome occasions northern viewers have seen 30-minute segments of news film clips and information blurbs which one CBC spokesman here call- ed "bits and pieces of nothing." The daily reruns are the result of CBC's using the million telecommunications satellite ANIK to distribute programming across the country and to supply the north with live television. At the end of September CBC abandoned its leased microwave network used to transmit programs from Toronto the CBC receiving station where they were recorded for use later in the day. Then ANIK was used to transmit the same programs and the problems started. When the microwave system was used, two of the three channels rented off Anik by the CBC were being used for northern feeds. The eastern areas of the north received Halifax programm- ing and the western areas, in- cluding Yellowknife, saw Van- couver CBC programming. During the summer, Territorial councillor Bryan Pearson of Frobisher Bay referred to Anik as "a joke." "Anik was designed specifically to move CBC data from Halifax to Vancouver and back; the northern ser- vices are just little bits of gravy." CBC spokesmen in Yellowknife agree. "It's a bloody poor one technician said. They (Toronto) could care less what Jiappens to us. There's no urgency on their part; they've got what they want." A CBC northern services spokesman in Ottawa said the channels available for northern broadcasting were also ussd for internal traffic within the corporation. He said the situation was likely to continue until northern broadcasting took precedence over other CBC services. The alternative to repetitive programming is either to have the viewers watch the internal traffic or have a blank screen. 's Harvest Shellers in Vancouver face a seemingly impossible work load after shrimp boats come in. Next year as many as 20 specially rigged boats will likely be in service' harvesting a bonanza of shrimps from major new grounds discovered off Tofino on the west coast of Vancouver Island, says the federal fisheries department.
