Lethbridge Herald (Newspaper) - October 17, 1970, Lethbridge, Alberta S2 - THE IETHBRIDGE HERALD - Saturday^ Odobsr 17.. 1970 / Wootcv HEADS CHF - A. D. Atkins of Calgary is the new president of the Canadian Heart Foundation. FEELING FINE BRANJICA, Yugoslavia CAP) - In 1910, when he was 32, Mil-eta Vujie was retired from the police and given a life pension because of a serious lung ill-nes. He's 94 now, feeling fine. Anti-Pollution Ideas Advanced EDMONTON (CP) - Research scientist Bill Kerr of Calgary has suggested that industry slow down production to reduce pollution. He told a pollution teach-in at the University of Alberta that the root of the pollution problem must be reached instead of just treating symptoms. Dr. Kerr, president of the Scoeity for Pollution and Environmental Control, said traffic engineers should try to reduce air pollution be replacing cars with "a good bus system." Labor union officials should "attempt to curb workers' excesses a bit" by fighting for a shorter work week so workers don't produce so much and want so much. Oil companies should try to slow consumption of petroleum. Producers of electric power could start a campaign to have people turn out thier lights when they're not using them TRAILER SPECIAL 1111811 Si* STREAMLINE COUNTESS 26 FT. Another way of meeting the problem, Dr. Kerr said, is to approach "zero population and economic growth." Elimination of family allowances would be one way of discouraging population growth. George Brown, an engineer for Northwestern Utilities Ltd., said people must decide how they want to live. Mass production was the only way to meet the mass demand necessary "to live in the manner we have come to expect." "Unfortunately, in the manufacturing industry there are many waste products." SHELL OBJECTS M. D. Winning, co-ordinator of environmental control for Shell Canada Ltd. exploration and production department, objected to allegations that industry is doing nothing to reduce pollution. He said Shell, for example, takes water for a southern Alberta gas plant from one creek and returns it to another creek in purer form than when it entered the plant. Arab Minister Blames U.S. For Mideast State Of War UNITED NATIONS (AP) -Foreign Minister Mahmoud Riad of Egypt said Friday "the United States bears squarely the responsibility for the continuation of the state of war in the Middle East." In a policy speech before the 25th anniversary session of the United Nations General Assem- MISSING FISH MILAN, Tenn. (AP) - Someone has rustled 75 head of L. D. Holt's stock. Holt said he checked an isolated area of his farm recently and discovered someone had run off with all the catfish he stocked in a pond two years ago. Rentalsman Appointment Scheduled WINNIPEG (CP) - Manitoba's first rentalsman will be appointed soon, Consumer Affairs Minister Ben Hanuschak said here. He said the appointment could come within the next week and it is expected the first rentalsman would serve the Winnipeg area. The office of rentalsman, a kind of tenants ombudsman, was allowed by amendments to the Landlord and Tenant Act passed at the last session of the legislature. The legislation calls for creation of several rentalsmen in various areas of the province, each with the power to mediate disputes between landlords and tenants. Initially, disputes would be heard by a rent review board - also to be established - with the rentalsman making the final decisions. bly, the Egyptian minister said the U.S. had removed itself as a possible peace-maker by its military aid to Israel. "This role," he added, "calls for an impartial and even-handed policy." Riad; in his first speech here since the death of President Gamal Abdel Nasser, lashed out at Israel as an aggressor but much of his attack was directed at the U.S. He said the U.S. had taken the initiative last June in setting up peace talks under the direction of UN mediator Gunnar V. Jarring, but had under "Zionist pressure" joined Israel in Wiling the talk. He specifically accused the U.S. of encouraging Israel's alleged aggression by backing its demands for the withdrawal of Egyptian missiles said to have been shifted in the Suez ceasefire area after the Aug. 7 standstill agreement. "We explained to the United States that we had not introduced any new missiles in the Suez canal region, nor did we set up new positions. We did, however, use concrete instead of sandbags to protect some of the existing positions." NEED A SCAFFOLD? CALL 328-8896 We Also Rent . . .
