The industrial index, consid- ered the major indicator of market trend, fell 1.88 to 230.75. golds .46 to 261.94. base metals .19 to 108.57 and western oils 6.63 to 251.73. Volume by 11 a.m. was 869.- 000 shares compared with 970.000 at the same time Mon- day Declines led advances by more than three-to-one, 239 to 68, with 210 issues unchanged. Oil refining, paper and forest, industrial mining and merchandising stocks were among declining sectors of the market while bank and construction and material issues gained.
