Proper Living Habits Can Diminish Heart 'Skips' Dear Doctor - My heartbeat "sMps." How serious is this? My doctor advises me not to worry about skips. I take it he means they are meaningless. I don't notice them except when blood pressure is being checked or the heartbeat monitored with a stethoscope. I've noted up to 12 skips in a minute and find it hard to accest this as harmless. Dear Reader - The sensation of skipped heartbeats is usually caused by one beat occurring so early that very little blood is ejected by the heart. You notice the lack of the pulsation or the effects of the next heartbeat, which is unusually forceful. Amost everyohe probably has an occasional skipped beat of this type. Usually, they are infrequent and go unnoticed. If they occur frequently and annoy the patient, then it is often advisable to do somefMng to control them. This something is eliminating coffee, tea, cola drinks, cigarettes and any foods that cause indigestion. These factors are known to increase the likelihood of skipped beats. It is not normal to have frequent skipped beats and indeed they can be caused by heart disease. Most people with heart attacks die from a rapid series of early beats of the heart that make it ineffective as a pump- We watch for these In the new specialized coronary care units and, as soon as skipped beats start, medicine is given to control them. I am mclined to think that as many as 12 skipped beats a minute is excessive, although it doesn't mean you will necessarily have trouble right away. Your doctor has to weigh the need to do anything else about your irregularity against the dangers of the various medicines he is using in yoin- particular case. He may feel that the medicine you are already getting is providing you suffi-dent protection against serious irregularity of the heart. It is true that the more conscious you are of an irregularity the more it will bother you. This in itself can oaiise skipped beats to occur more frequently. I rather think this is why your doctor has told you not to worry about them. Worry and anxiety for any reason can cause skipped beats in some people. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to "stx)p worrying," as the doctor often advises. It is true that individuals who do not have good exercise programs are more prone to having extra beats or skipped beats. A good training program carried out gradually over a period of time often diminishes or eradicates the irregularity. Of course, not everyone can undergo such a program if they have heart trouble. So, if you have skipped beats, look at your habit pattern first and make changes if you are using tobacco, coffee or don't get enough exercise. LEO (July 23 - Aug. 22): Any recent presentation (rf yours is open to attack or comment. Remember that those who comment are likely to project their own faults as if they were yours. listen and learn. VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 22): Follow any technical instructions exactly. Care in aU areas should come fluently and gracefully, to the general benefit of all. Keep the peace. New Pollution Bill Coming OTTAWA (CP) - Transport Minister Don Jamieson today gave formal notice that he will introduce a bill to amend the Canada Shipping Act to prohibit discharge of pollutants by ships. The bill would make ship owners liable for losses by fishei> men because of pollutants discharged by ships. It would also provide for a maritime pollution claims fund and for the appointment of officials with pollution control powers who would also assess losses by fishermen. Though the bill will soon get formal first reading^ there was no indication when it would be debated in the Commons. 1,300 Doctors Ready To Move MONTREAL (CP) - Some 1,300 Quebec doctors have taken preliminary measures to move their practices out of the province, Uie Quebec College of Physicians and Surgeons reported here. Anti-TB Vaccine Helps Leukemia LONDON (.CP) - A research team from the miicrobiology institute of the University of Montreal has disclosed the apparently beneficial effects of an anti-tuberculosis vaccine known as BCG oo the leukemia mortality rate amoog persons under 15 in Quebec province in the four years beginning with 1960. Andy sends a World Book Globe to Catherine Pitts, age 10, of Tucson, Arizona, for her question: Why don't fish blink? Our eyelids blink by themselves, somewhat like built-in windshield wipers. Their duty is tt wash the shiny surface of the eyes, removing fine particles of dust. Blinking also is necessary for us because the shiny surface of the eyes must be kept moist. In addition to eyelids, the Ask About The NEW INVISIBLE MULTIFOCAL LENS rMULTILUX^ blinking operation also requires a steady supply of cleaning fluid. This material is manufactured in the tear glands inside the comers of the eyes. A fish does not need any of the built-in equipment because it is not necessary for him to blink. The water in which he lives washes his eyes for him. He never sheds tears of sorrow and he needs no special cleaning fluid to wash his eyes. So he has no tear glands - and he has no eyelids. Day and night, waking or sleeping, his eyes stay open in a fishy stare. Questions asked by children of Herald readers should be mailed to Ask Andy, P.O. Box 765, Huntington Beach, California 92648.
