Other- wise it's a whole new scene for Vince Edwards on television. Edwards, who played Ben Casey for five years on ABC. has returned to the network this season as Matt Lincoln. The dif- ference between the series? "In Casey, we were limited to clinical neurosur g e r y. We ran out of plots after the first three years. Matt Lincoln is a com- munity psychiatrist. He doesn't just treat people in his office; in fact, we never show a couch in the show. 'He runs a c r i s i s clinic, a place for people to call when they are in trouble. All kinds of people, all k i n d s of trouble. Most of the time he goes to them, so there is a constant change of locale. We're not stuck within four walls, as we are with Casey." i The new series was originally called Dial Hotline, and there were some squawks from sta- tion owners when the new title was added, TITLE CONFUSED Edwards explained: "The old title confused some people; they thought it was a game show. Also we discovered that other series that had a similar note of urgency in !he Elev- enth Hour, The Breaking Point do well. "Besides, viewers want to identify with people. They time _s 1TV HIGHLIGHTS! Rowau-Martiii System Goes On Market HOLLYWOOD (AP) Dan Rowan and Dick Martin of Laugh-In are in the television cassette business. Cassettes are recorded reels you'll be able to pop into a slot to play a program of your choice on your own screen whenever the evening's TV schedule looks dull. The Rowan-Martir. system will be on the market by early 1971, Rowan said here at the international symposium of TV cassettes. The first three Rowan and Martin cassettes, 35-minute pro- grams in color, star George Burns on one, Jack Benny on another and Rowan and Martin on a third. Most cassette systems use magnetic videotape, inserted into a player that connects to the owner's TV set. Estimated costs of players range as high as VINCE EDWARDS Back On TV in to see Corner Pyle and Mar- cus Welby. Lincoln." Edwards, born Vicente Zoino in Brooklyn 42 years ago, knocked around Hollywood for a dozen years, playing mostly in lower budget crime and war movies. During the last televi- sion medical cycle, hs hit it big with Ben Casey and managed to wangle a 10-per-tent interest in the series, produced by B i n g Crosby .Productions. "The series probably could have gone longer than five he recalled. "But I just got tired of that uniform and the four walls-" Like most series-stars, he quit with the intention of devoting his talents to feature films. What happened? WRONG TIMING "My timing was he sighed. "I did The Devil's Bri- gade, for which all of us had Ugh hopes; but it came right after The Duty Dozen. "I did Hammerhead, but it suffered by coming at the end of the cycle of James Bond, Mat Mm and In Like Flint de- tective movies. "Then Columbia put me into one of those Italian made spa- ghetti Westerns, but that cycle had died. So back to tele- vision He has no regrets, especially since the series is a co-produc- tion with his own company and Universal. "I don't mind the he said. "Nowadays you make only 24 shows a season, compared to the 32 to 36 we used to do. No problem."
