Alan Wood, vice- president for Canada of the American Federation of which most musicians, formers earn "hardly a nickel" from the broadcast in- dustry. Mr. Wood .told the commis- sion the union wants musicians to be employed to make fresh recordings for all commercials on the air, whether for national network use or local station ad- vertisements for local retailers. Pierre Juneau, CRTC chair- man, said this was a radical proposal and might mean small or large orchestras would have to be employed by each radio station, no matter what size. But Mr. Wood replied that wouldn't be necessary if the production of advertising messages became an industry apart from broadcasting. The CRTC is hearing testi- mony from broadcasters, ad- vertisers, and others on a pro- posal to require more Cana- dian creative, performing and technical talent to be used in radio and TV commercials in this country. Advertisers have complain- ed that the new regulations, which take effect next .year, will 'increase the cost of advertising and thus force higher prices for shoppers or lower employment in the broadcast industry. He added, however, that the union still is willing to discuss musicians' fees with broad- casters if ways can be found to increase employment. Until a few years ago, the union re- quired- double pay for music recorded for English and French commercials, but musicians now are paid only once for commercials prepared in the two languages. Mr. Wood also attacked broadcasters' use of library music and sound effects im- ported from abroad. will confer an honorary doctor of laws degree on Dr. A. W. R.
