Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - October 13, 1972, Lethbridge, Alberta Four musical veterans in Big Band Cavalcade By nOB THOMAS HOLLYWOOD (AP) The current craze for nostalgia will be given fresh impetus this fall with a tour of four names that can warm the memories of any- one over 40: Frankie Carle, Boh Crosby, Freddy Martin and Margaret Writing. The foursome star in Big Band Cavalcade, a musical package that hod its premiere in Fresno, Cnlil., recently and will be on the road until the final date in Seattle, Wash., Dec. 3. The schedule is enough to weary a youthful rock group: 80 U.S. cities in 84 days. But at a rehearsal here, all four musical veterans were looking forward to the tour with pleasure. "It's so marvellous to play be- fore audiences who are hearing the big-band sound for the first I time in said Freddy Martin, who had the idea for I the tour. "All they hear nowa-1 days is the rock V roll sound, j which isn't tlie same. "I've done a lot of louring, and I find that it isn't just the j older folks who like our kind of music. I've played a lot of col- lege dates, and we have many scheduled on this tour. There's a lot of music in colleges, you know; not just rock, but march- ing bands and serious music. The students enjoy hearing birt- band music played by topflight musicians." FEATURE OLD HITS Martin has assembled 15 ex- i p e r t instrumentalists, some from his own band, some vet- erans of Crosby's Dixieland Bobcats. Their music filled the rehearsal room with j without the car-piercing atnplifi- i cation of today's rock bands. The rehearsal featured the 30-year-oid hits of the four stars: Martin's Tonight We Love and Warsaw Concerto, Crosby's Muskrat Ramble and Ramp'art Street Pa-ade: Carle's Sunrise Serenade and Hindus- tan; Whiting's It Might As Well Be Spring and Moonlight in Ver- mont.
