The victory came after the fifth round when Otero's man- ager, Richard Riesgo, refused to allow his fighter to go out for the sixth round. Riesgo said after the fight he was afraid Otero might suf- fer serious injury from the heavy pounding he was taking hard left and right hooks. Buchanan scored the only knockdown of the fight when he decked Otero with a solid right hook late in the first round, although Otero jumped up at the count of two. as the round ended. During the next four rounds, Buchanan continued to back Otero against the ropes with flurries of left jabs, setting up the Miami fighter for solid hooks to the head. After each of Buchanan's attacks. Otero appeared groggy, but managed to stay on his feet and occasionally landed a few hooks to the body. It was Buchanan's second victory over Otero this year. Buchanan decisioned him in a 10-round match in Miami last May. The win was the 50th in Bu- chanan's 52-fight career. The Scot, who has lost only two fights, including one which saw him lose the world lightweight championship to Roberto Duran, weighed in at 134 pounds for the bout before about fans at Maple Leaf Gardens. Tigers land Ralph Houk Umpires selected NEW YORK (AP) Um- pire Marty Springstead of the American League will be behind the plate when the World Series opens Saturday, baseball commissioner Bowie Kuhn announced Thursday. The other umpires will be Augie Donatelli of the National League at first base, Jerry Neudecker of the AL at second base, Paul Pryor of the NL at third base, Russ Goetz of the AL on the left field line and Harry Wendelstedt of the NL on the right field line. The umpires will rotate positions each game. DETROIT (AP) Ralph Houk became "the highest- priced manager we've had in the history of the ball Detroit general manager Jim Campbell said Tursday in an- nouncing the selection of the former New York Yankee skipper as manager of the Tigers. Houk, 54, agreed to a three- year contract which Campbell said was also the longest for any of the 26 managers in the 73-year history of the American League baseball club. Houk was not present for the announcement, but was flying in from his Florida home, the Tigers said. Personally, I think he's a heck of a fine guy and he's got all the qualities we were look- ing Campbell said. BOX 247 Among those qualities Campbell said, were "ex- perience, reputation, the handling of men and the runn- ing of a ball game." When asked if Houk's con- tract made him the Tigers' first manager, Campbell said: "No." Houk is reported to have re- ceived a year as man- ager of the Yankees when he quit on the final day of the regular season, with two years left on his contract. Houk replaces acting man- ager Joe Schultz, who took over the Tigers when Billy Martin was fired Sept. 2. Mar- tin's salary was reported to be between and Campbell said his first real conversation with Houk about the opening was last Sunday, and since then there were only a few minor details to be iron- ed out. Houk managed the Yankees for 11 years, beginning in 1961. He went to the front office as general manager in" 1964, but returned to the dugout in 1966. He led the team to World Series victories in 1961 and 1962, and to the American League pennant in 1963. He was named manager of the year in 1961 and 1970.
