Spragins, president of Syncrude Canada Ltd., mentioned the mid 1960s as the time when the province's energy requirements will be crucial and when substitute sources, such as coal and nuclear power, would have to take up the slack. Both said that extraction from the Athabasca oil sands and coal reserves can reasonably be expected to meet the demand. "We need not be cottcerned in Alberta about our supply of Dr. Berkowitz said. Commenting on coal, he said there have been workable coal reactor processes in operation in Europe for more than 40 years and Canada has just recently become interested enough to move into that field. He said coal can be processed to obtain every component now found in crude oil and natural gas. Mr. Spragins said people now are working at the com- pany's site and the target date for production of synthetic crude from the oil sands remains at 1978.
