DycX, 3hone 3J5-3I2J. plieiiomeiioii is fii'st TORONTO (CP) The final explosion of a supernova, a sun it the end of its life, may be occurring in tlie outer reaches of the universe. Since the phenomenon has never occurred in the modern era, astronomers cannot be certain whether that is the of mysterious out-bursts of electromagnetic radiation from a similar object in the Constellation Cygnus. Tlie activity was first detected a month ago by Philip Gregory, a University of Toronto astronomer, who first calculated that the object, called Cygims X-3, was spewing out radiation 2CO times its normal intensity. Later, the figure was revised to nearly 1.000 times normal. There have tliree subsequent outbursts of lesser intensity but even at its lowest ebb, Cygnus X-3 is emitting radiation 100 times greater than its previous norm, said Dr. Gregory. He said astronomers are "beginning to wonder if we'll see something even more cataclysmic than we've seen already.11 Actually, no one has yet succeeded in seeing Cygnus X-3 visually but its activities have measured on astronomical ins t rum en ts by a world- wido network of observatories. Dr. Gregory said several papers on Cygnus X-3, including two Canadian ones, will be published tliis month in the scientific journal Nature. RAL LXPER1ENCED COTABirJE: tDeralcrs ant! truck drivers.
