"As the member knows, ap- pointments at this level are made by order in council by the government. The kind of suspicion he is showing exists mainly in the member's mind." In addition to filling the dep- uty minister's position, Mr. Pitfield, 37, now is studying and lecturing at Harvard University in Cambridge. CONTINUES AT BUY-RITES SLACKS Polyester Cotton. VICTORIA (CP) Speed limits on all mam roads in British Columbia will be reduced in an effort to lessen the number of traffic ac- cidents and fatalities, Highways Minister Graham Lea announced Tuesday He told a news conference the 60 miles an hour speed hmif m effect for most main highways will be reduced to 55 and the 70 m p h limit on freeways will be cut to 60. Vancouver Island and some other areas with high traffic and accident potential will be posted at 50 m p.h Mr. Lea said As for central and southern interior sections of the province, he said it would take longer to post the new limits It isn't fcUMONTON (CP) Reductions in speed limits don't necessarily lead to reductions in traffic ac- cidents, an Alberta Motor Association (AMA) statement said Tuesday The AMA, referring to an announcement by the British Columbia government that speed limits on all main roads in B C would be reduced in an attempt to lessen the number of traffic accidents, said a re- cent study in Ontario cites factors such as road con- ditions and traffic volume as more important than speed The AMA also said that speed limits established on highways on the basis of in- dividual conditions were preferable to blanket speed limits covering all highways. and he had no idea when the job would be completed. The minister said the deci- sion to reduce the speed limits was based on a study by his department of statistics following the introduction of the 55 m.p.h. speed Imut in the US "We are convinced within the department that a reduc- tion in speed limits will bring down the fatality rate and the accident Mr. Lea said. OTHER LIMITS Central and southern B.C.: Trans Canada Highway 1 will in general be reduced from 60 m.p.h. to 55 m p h. but two sections will be reduced to 50 m.p.h. These are from' Savona to Monte Creek and from Golden to the Alberta border 3 from Hope through Princeton to Keremeos will be reduced to 50 m.p.h from Hurt Flat (South of Salmo) to Sparwood the limit will be 55 m p h Mr Lea said most of Route 3 from Osoyoos to Salmo will likely only qualify for the 50 m.p.h. limit but this is still under consideration routes through the Okanagan numbers 3A, 97, 97A between Route 3 and Route 1 will be reduced to a 50 m.p.h. limit. In the East Kootenays routes numbered and 95A will be reduced to 55 m.p.h. within the area generally route numbers 5, 6, 31, 31A, 33 and 3A south from Kootenay Bar will have the 50 m p h limit DERIVED FROM CREE A Cree word meaning swift- flowing was used to identify the Saskatchewan River and the province of the same name. 5s" Time for Mac Munchers everywhere to enjoy the orchard-fresh goodness of new-crop B.C.
