He told the annual meet- ing of the Ontario Chapter the College of Family Physicians of Canada that "the apologists would prob- ably say it is better not to destroy the enemy's city only his nervous sys- tem." "It (chemical warfare) is much more likely to be used because it makes more sense: why destroy New York City if you can have New York City." changes, the committee turns thumbs down on a proposal to end deductions for conventions and entertainment for business- men. The white paper tabled last November by. Finance Minister Edgar Benson made the sugges- tion in a section outlining a gen- eral crackdown on expense ac- count living, which it described as a sourcs of tax abuses. The committee report ap- proved a proposal to allow a geeral income tax deduction of to any employee, designed to help pay for his expenses in holding a job. REDUCE TAKE Bui the committee report noted that the flat deduc- tion would reduce the govern- ment's tax take by. an esti- mated million in a year. While admitting that, in the interest of fail- treatment, any taxpayer, self-employed or not, would be able to itemize and deduct expenses connected with doing his job, the committee said that this should be consid- ered only "as soon as revenue needs permit." At this time, the report said, "we hesitate to suggest that employees' deductions be broadened." On retaining deductions by businessmen for entertainment conventions and club member- ships, the committee r e po r t said: "The committee recommends that entertainment expenses should continue to be allowed, provided they are properly sub- stantiated by means of detailed records. Ltd. an- nounced here their Toronto department stores will be open Thanksgiving Day. Simpsons was also open Labor Day and Eaton's on On. tario's Civic Holiday, but offi- cials said the holiday openings do not necessarily mean a new policy is being adopted. Ontario has seven statutory holidays. Employers must pay time-and-a-half to employees who work any of them, and Eaton's and Simpsons grant an extra day off as well.
