Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - October 5, 1970, Lethbridge, Alberta 12 THI LETHBRIDCI HERALD Monday, Otlobtr 3, Both Have Used Marijuana, Hashish, LSDAndMescaline Canadian School Girls Tell Of Starting Drugs At Age 12 MONTREAL (CP) Marie and AnnD are pretty, intelli- gent and curious about life. They look like many other 13- year-old Montreal girls. And, like many others even at that age, they have experi- mented with hashish, LSD and mescaline. Both now say they have dropped the latter two. Both started at the age of 12. They are not the youngest users in Montreal, but they are the youngest a social worker was able to find who were willing- to talk about themselves. Psychiatrists, doctors and social workers say that some youngsters aged 9 use drugs in Montreal. But, one social worker said, parents tend to hush up such cases and keep away professional helpers. Marie and Anne didn't want their real names used. They are both Grade 8 students and, in the view of the contact who introduced them to a re- porter, they are fairly typical of young Montrealers who are on drugs. FLED SOCIETY The girls live in an east-end middle-class environment. They said they "turned on" to the drug culture either to get away from a society they critr irize or to explore their own feelings and emotions. Marie, her thick and curly brown hair held by an elastic, smoked a cigarette white she talked. A lot of kids in her school use drugs, she said. They are easy to get and the kids know where to go if they need a supply fast. Anne said much the same. "You can get drugs downtown or with some connections. Lots of people have them." Marie, who has two older brothers, 19 and 17, said: "I started experimenting with drugs at the end of Au- gust a year ago. I don't know really why. I guess I was cu- rious to find out what they were like. "A bunch of my friends de- cided they wanted to try pot. We had never done it before. "There's no problem at home, really. We never dis- cuss drugs. My parents and older brothers are dead set against them." She didn't know how her parents would read; if they knew she was taking drugs, paid for with a weekly al- lov.ance they give her. "I have stopped dropping acid (LSD) which can be quite nice .ai Marie added. "I did it about 18 to 20 times. "My first trip was really bad, crying and laughing, and there wasn't anyone there to tell us what was happening. But I enjoyed most of my other trips." She tried mescaline only once and has no intention of trying it again. "That was bad. I felt just like a garbage can after. "I wanted to try it out but I was scared and there wasn't very much so I didn't get off too well. I don't want to try that again. "I have stopped "taking .completely now. I "CHARGE IT" CONVENIENT CREDIT TERMS CAN BE ARRANGED together and buy few smokes, maybe twice a week, but that's all." Anne, her blonde hair tied back in a neat pony tail, spoke without hesitation and rather defiantly about her ex- periences. "All ray friends were trying them and I thought I would too. I liked it. "But maybe I started be- cause I wanted to get away from my mother or thing. She was always' bother- ing me." Anne is the second of too girls. Her mother is a widow and never mentions drugs. She has been caught twice at home. "I usually get grounded and I'm not allowed to do any- thing. "But that doesn't change anything." Anne pays for the drugs with a weekly allowance. She smokes about twice a week, at school, in the park, a friend's home or somewhere else. TRIP WAS BAP ONE "I have stopped acid be- cause I realize how bad it is. My first trip was a real sur- prise, a bad one. I never ex- pected so much from such a small pill. "I dropped acid about 21 times. After my first trip I tried it a few more times and liked it, but that's all over now." Anne didn't like mescaline any more than Marie. "It wasn't at all interesting. It gives you a sort of tense feeling, very destructive, like tearing the whole place- apart." The effects of the drugs both girls have taken vary, psychiatrists and social work- ers say. Marijuana or pot, and hash- ish both come from the canna- bis plant, but hashish is six times more potent. Pot 'is smoked like a cigarette, while slivers of hash, sold in com- pressed cubes, are put on burning end of cigarette with the smoke inhaled through drinking straw. Both tend to disorganize the thought process, distort per- ceptions and dull attention. During a three-hour "high" time expands and space is distorted. The drugs take ef- fect in about 30 minutes. LSD is a natural product of ergot fir jus, clavieeps purpu- rea, found on rye and other plants. A synthetic compound can easily be made by college chemistry majors. As a white crystal-like powder, it can be eaten with sugar cubes or crackers and is also available as a little white pill. Effects are felt in about 30 minutes and a trip lasts up to 12 hours. COLOR INTENSIFIES During a trip perceptions al- ternate. The user may feel he's making deep contacts with people around him, breaking down social barriers and inhi- bitions. Also, he may feel he's experiencing and feeling him- self. Time is distorted; colors are intensified. Mescaline is the most active substance in peyote, a cucum- ber-like cactus found in the southwestern United States. It is weak compared with LSD, and large amounts are needed to get a proper "high." It is sold in tablet or capsule form. An average trip lasts four to 12 hcurs. The user gets a trance-like feeling with vivid kaleidos- copic visions and bright col- ors, but there are no rapid emotional changes as with LSD. After a trip, .the user often falls into a deep sleep.
