Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - October 3, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta Thursday, October 3, 1974 THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD 19 Women athletes appalled at poor shape of Canadians TORONTO (CP) Petra Burka, 27, former world champion figure skater, says the human body is a beautiful machine and needs to be kept in good condition to be appre- ciated That's why Miss Burka and other women athletes and fit- ness instructors are appalled at the poor shape Canadian women are in. String bikini popular PALM SPRINGS, Calif (AP) The little something in swim wear that hit beaches last summer is back again this coming season, and its impact on sand-and-sun fashions is ex- pected to be extensive. It is the the briefest bikini ever. Designers at the California Fashion Creators preview Tuesday said they expected it to influence the sale of more traditional bikinis. "I think women who once found the bikini immodest will start buying more of them when they see women on the beach wearing much said one designer. The trend in other swim wear fashions is toward the natural body, unconstructed, never-contrived suit such as maillots and tanks, and toward the one-piece look again Cole of California favors backs lowered to the limits and the high French and stresses cut-outs and prints in geometric patterns, tatter- sail, racing checks, dots and florals. Catalma's swimwear made a splash with a new nylon- lycra spandex knit called realskin, which is lightweight, clinging and soft to the touch. Poppy Inc. "believed in the said Kathy Brown, vice-president and designer of the five-year-old company, and "we've already sold thousands of them." THE BETTER HALF A recent study showed that Canadian women are in worse condition than Canadian men, particularly women between the ages of 20 and 29. "It's said Anna Pandos, head of a Toronto women's fitness club. She said that though some women are in fair shape and could probably still run half a mile, "it would probably kill them." Debbie Van Kiekebelt, 20, who competes internationally in the pentathlon, said many women have good figures but when they walk they're so flabby that "everything jiggles like a bowl of jelly." "If most women did any kind of exercise it would be an said Marion Lay, 25, a former champion swimmer. Miss Lay now works as a consultant for Sports Canada "We have a syndrome in Canada that says any woman involved in sports is not femi- said Miss Van Kiekebelt "We have been brought up to avoid sports because they involve sweat." Miss Burka agreed. She said mothers like to see their daughters in frilly dresses, playing with dolls, rather than doing something active. She and Miss Lay also blam- ed the media's massive coverage of male sports, and the lack of attention paid to fe- male sports. Miss Burka said that what publicity exists is usually negative, showing female swimmers leaving the pool dripping wet or track stars finishing a race hot and sweaty. Janet Percival, 26, former head of the women's program at the Fitness Institute run by her late father, Lloyd Per- cival, said many women do not realize they are losing their fitness. "They are leaning on their old high school fitness and they don't realize how unfit they are until it's too late." Miss Lay said there are fewer clubs and programs for women than for men. Mall Peepre, a consultant for Recreation Canada, said there is a lack of competent female fitness and sports instructors. "Only 50 per cent of the classes for women are of a calibre I would ever recommend to anyone." But the tide is turning. Sales of sports equipment and mem- berships in health clubs are in- creasing, and more and more women joggers can be found in city parks and streets. Miss Peepre said Sports Canada is developing a home fitness test and to be done at home, which is expected to be available, free of charge, in December. Ann Landers Dear Ann.Landers: My question is a simple one and it requires only a simple answer. Is it unnatural for a well-developed, 18-year-old girl to invite her father into the bathroom to keep her com- pany while she takes a bath? I am not a prude or a Puritan but it seems to me that this sort of thing is out of line. It's been going on for about five years When I expressed myself I was told whole families bathe together in Japan and think By Barnes ''With all the wailing and screaming you'd never realize that all I did was x-ray his teeth." Called Hyperbaric Oxygenation, the process introduces oxygen into the blood at high pressure, in conjunction with a drug, resulting in improved brain function. Experiments using the pressure chamber are under way. Nurse Gerrish and Claude Kirk Sr. demonstrate the chamber. Here's the clearance many people wait for nothing of it. What about this, Ann? Uneasy On The East Coast Dear Uneasy: Neither the girl nor her father have to ex- cel in geography to know this isn't Japan. In our culture, an 18-year-old girl should not be inviting her father into the bathroom and he shouldn't be accepting such invitations. It's not only "unnatural" but indecent. Dear Ann Landers: I am dumb because I can't play the piano like his sister or cook the way his mother did You are smart because you live in Chicago and hand out advice. This is what my husband says. And now, because he thinks you have so many brains, will you please say something in your column about a man who has to have a couple of beers at lunch, a couple of beers with his supper and four or five beers in the evening while he reads the paper and watches TV? Anyone who looks at him can see he has a weight problem. He does- n't realize, however, that he also has a drinking problem In the meantime the kids don't even try to talk to him after his fourth beer because he makes no sense. I hope you will print my letter and say something about this. Beer Belly's Wife Dear Wife: Many people try to fool themselves (and others) into believing they have no drinking problem because they drink "only beer" or "only or they never touch liquor until five o'clock. All these people may be alcoholics. Your husband is a beer drunk if he makes no sense after the fourth. Dear Ann Landers: I am one of those fortunate women who became a mother through adoption. Hundreds of times I've wanted to say. "Thank you, dear to that wonderful young mother who gave up her baby because she knew it would be best for the child. Dear Mother Of Our Child: You have made our lives worth living. You have given us the most precous gift in the world. If you ever wonder if you did the tight thing, please know the answer is "yes." Because of your un- selfishness and mature judgment, your little one will get a great deal of love from a mommy and dad and two sets of doting grandparents. And, because she is so loved and cherished, she will grow up straight and strong and secure. God bless you. Another Mother Dear Mother: I am not printing the name of your city. Let thousands of young women believe this letter was for them. Jordans CARPET BAZAAR With savings up to 50% on excess stocks that must be cleared!
