But he has been convicted only once and that is being appealed He never has served time in jail The law was passed tour years ago after a series of demonstrations in which crowds filled corridors and of- fices "I will destroy say the placards around Simp- son's neck and tied to his chrome wheelchair and walk- ing aid British-born Simpson, whose first picketing arrest was in front of the House of Commons in 1902, started his campaign to protest a six- month stay in a mental hospital before being found sane Simpson obtained an inter- view with Reagan, who told him he had no legal grounds on which to act on his mental hospital internment By MICHAEL BENNETT CP Correspondent Tim Buckley doesn't want to be known as the creator of Deep Throat rock 'n' roll, he just thinks it's time the music -dealt with sexuality on a real, instead of allusive, level. He doesn't do it in the nude, in drag or suspended from a gallows pole. He has an incredible five-range instru- ment in a voice that takes audiences to places they've never been before The lyrics are light years away from kisses sweeter than wine and the clinical aspects of most love songs "Rock 'n' roll has never said anything about sex, all the way down the says Buckley, whose poetry and tortured guttural scat are Another MAGIC CARPET SALE Value FROM Towfte Country Turnitw? 5 Piece Group Features colonial styling 2 pc davenport set plus a matching 3 pee. table set- perfect for family or living room Solidly constructed on hardwood frame with coil springs covered with felt and foam Check pattern m quality cover Colors Brown, Green, Ebony 5 Piece Group MAGIC CARPET SALE 5 Pieces All customers making a purchase, will have their name entered in our draw barrel. "It was always hinting at it, implying, but never saying anything about actually being in bed. or even starting on that premise. I figured it was high time to be very blatant about it" However, sex and hit singles don't mix and the reaction of AM radio to his album Greetings From LA was predictable. Even the supposedly-liberated turned reactionary when they heard the new Tim Buckley. HECKLED IN NEW YORK "I was playing a concert in New York a couple of weeks ago and there were some gays m the audience calling me a sexist pig, which at my age 26 is pretty much of a com- pliment. "At first it threw me. I said "My God. I'd better lighten up.' then I figured that's their hangup, their mental block So I had to say: may be the inner-city stud today, tomorrow, you'll be the suburban stud and eventually, checkers at the hrehouse It's all love. I'm not doing anything to put you up- tight "Actually, they're play- acting at being gay. A person who is gay doesn't scream or paint themselves up. It's a lad. I know my little sister's going through it, she's 15 So-called fag rock groups like the New York Dolls and Sylvester and the Hot Band are part of probably the worst exploitation since advertising executives discovered black is beautiful, says Buckley. FAD WON'T LAST "I think it's very unfair to the gay population, because it doesn't say anything about any of the problems or the joys of gayness. People are making money on it, but it won't Buckley believes there's nothing on stage unless there's sex. but it's not something he plans to flaunt. "Dylon was very sexy, never said a word, just spew- ed out his prayer wheel of words And what you caught, you caught I think if you do what you do honestly and peo- ple accept it as sexy, that's the way it is. "But' to flaunt it The telegram I sent the late Jim Morrison of the Doors when he took off his pants in Miami was 'It may get you in jail, Jim. but it won't get you out.' And that's pretty much the way I feel about it." The influences that helped shape Buckley and his amaz- ing voice came from all cor- ners of the musical spectrum Nat King Cole. Johnny Mathis, Gerry Mulligan, John Coltrane, Miles Davis His album. Blue Afternoon, was written around Edith Paif. STARTED EARLY "I gained consciousness in 1952. I heard on the radio that Dylan Thomas had died, then it went into Jo Stafford sing- ing Cross the Jungle When It's Wet With Rain And I started there "My mother was dating Mulligan at the time. I never met him, but there were a couple of albums around the house My .first real incentive to sing was Nat King Cole, and then I learned a little from Johnny Mathis, odd as it may seem now. "Then she started bringing home things that Coltrane and Miles had done, and then I started hearing music It sounds so far away today." Locked away in a vault in Los Angeles is an opera Buckley has written based on the novel Outcasts of the Islands, by Joseph Conrad The mysteries of the recording studio have allowed him to form a 16-voice choir "I paid for it myself It may be released or not. The most important thing is to have done it I know it will be heard sooner or later RADIO and TV LISTINGS Programs are listed by the Radio and Tele- vision Stations.
