Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - October 3, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta Wednesday, October 3, 1973 LETHBRIDGE Red Deer MP aims to win government game (t keeps old time values By PAUL JACKSON Herald Ottawa Bureau OTTAWA Red Deer MP Gordon Towers is a man ol oldtime values and morality and he doesn't intend to make any excuses for it no matter how broadmmded or permissive society becomes The ear-old Western Canadian farmer and lather of four thildien attributes much of his success in pulling oft a substantial election victory last October to standing by his oldtime philosophy that play the game to win but if you tail you pick yourself up, dust yourself oft, and try again For Mr Towers who picked up 21 000 votes against his closest opponent s 6 000 votes on election day, didn t come to Ottawa the easv wav He d been trying to win a federal seat for a full decade In 1963 Mr Towers ran as Conservative candidate against Robert Thompson who was then running under the Social Credit flag The Conservative lost In 1965, he tried again Once more Mr Thompson won Then, in 1968, by some swift footwork, the former Social Credit leader switched to the Progressive Conservatives and Mr Towers had to sit back and watch him win under his own banner and in his own constituency II there were hurt feelings about not being able to run as a Conservative in 1968 Mr Towers isn t saying so He 11 express dis- appointment at not winning in 1963 and 1965, perhaps feel it about not being able to carry the banner in 196, but true to his standards lie figures that if you can t say anything nice about a personality situation then don t say it The Western Canadian MP has had what one might call a great love affair with mankind ever since he can remember A past Giand Mastei ot the provincial Masonic the highest position one can achieve in the Mr Towers has also been president vice-president or director of an entire inge of community groups including home and school associations, agricultural societies and exhibition boards Quite simph he believes belonging to community groups or hateinal helps to develop a person s character un- derstand his fellow men and spread goodwill throughout society Also a former superintendent of a Sunday school Mr Towers can get on as well with local Knights of Columbus members as he can with members of the Masonic Lodge Since coming to Ottawa the Alberta MP has come across both good and bad He gets deep satisfaction at being able to help per- sons in his community who have contacted him as their last hope to solve problems both great and small He s also been frustrated at how slowly things in general move in Ottawa but at the same time believes there s some good in being forced to have patience A tvpical tall lean and quietly-spoken westerner Mr Towers soil voice and gentle manners shouldn't fool anyone into thinking lie lacks depth or conviction Recently he tripped up Energy Minister Donald Macdonald during the daily Commons question period arid forced the cabinet minister to admit he hadn t exactly lived up to commitments made to Alberta Premier Peter Lougheed regarding co-opeiation and consultation at all times on energy matters The Red Deer MP can't understand lapses like that and finds such behavior totally ungentlemanlv Despite his sti ong convictions Mr Towers is by no means a man who lefuses to change with the times His parents lor instance had been ardent Libeials except lor one period when his lather voted foi the United Fanners ot Alberta government during the Depiession father would probably turn in his grave if he could see me now chuckles Mr Towers I lemember when R B Bennett was elected Conservative prime minister oi Canada father s com- ment was that if the Conservatives ever had to win an election then during the Depression was a good time for them to do so' Mr Towers first began to have doubts about the Liberals and their dedication to the West during the late 1940s when the Liberals pulled the tug from under the farmers feet during the great in come tax letdown Then in 1957 and 1960 along came John Dief enbaker and the transformation to a WesternConservative was complete for both Mr Towers and his wife Dons Othei evidence oi the MP s abilitv to stand bv his convictions while still maintaining a flexible mind can be seen in his attitude to todav s vouthful protesters He admits to being concerned about permissiveness and recklessness in fhe young but believes that an me i easing number of people are responding to the real needs ol societv Look at groups such as the Jesus People which we not un del stand 01 even realh like too much But at least they i epresent a leal change from a year or so ago when we had rebellions in the un i verities It s good to see y oung people developing a real construe rattier than for societv and forming gioups to do something about it he concludes OCEAN SPRAY CRANBERRY SAUCE or JELLY BICK'S OILL PICKLES or POLISH
