For one sequence of his hour-long entertainment special, Jack Paar dispensed with the quips or a double to enter a car which was then submerged in 15 feet of water. This exciting segment will be JACK PAAR Left Over Muscles Darren McGavin, who will guest star in a Robert Stack segment of NBC-TV's "The Name of the says he didn't get his rugged build lift- ing weights. Filmed while his wife, Miri- am, looked on apprehensively, Paar demonstrated how Dutch drivers are taught to survive if their car accidentaDy. lands in one -Of the .many canals in the Netherlands. In Amsterdam alone, Paar explains, more than 50 cars annually plunge into the drink. At a school, 40 miles east of Amsterdam, believed to be the only one of its kind in the world, Paar was filmed enter- ing a car half-filled with water. The auto, with Paar inside equipped with a portable micro- phone, then shoved into the deepist part of the pool. As the vehicle gradually sank into 15 feet of water, Paar halt- ingly gave his reactions while the car filled up. Paar remained in the com- pletely submerged car live min- utes and .31 seconds. Then, when the water pressure was equal both inside and outside the car, he opened the door and swam to the surface. The secret of surviving this experience is not to panic, Paar cautions. "More people in this predicament die from heart attack than from he reveals. In Ms first network special since the critically-acclaimed "Jack Paar and His Lions" on NBC-TV in September, 1969, Paar has gathered vignettes from the Netherlands, Italy, England, Germany, Ireland and Spain.
