Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - November 30, 1972, Lethbridge, Alberta Thundoy, Novtmbir JO, THE LFTHMIDOI HHALD 17 New computerized traffic control to increase air safety By JEFF CAimUTHEIlS Herald Ottawa Bureau OTTAWA By 1977, Canada yill be served by a new, mod-rn, computerized air traffic ontrol system that promises to nerease not only the efficiency f human surveillance of air but also to improve the afety. And this will only be the (irst f three phases of a recently-pproved million project for he transport department under the acronym of JETS, which stands for Joint Enroute Terminal System. Tenders were called at the beginning of this month for the largest portion of phase one of the purchase of a million package of main computer processors, special tele-visi8n-like air. traffic control displays, and smaller computers to control these displays. Tenders close Feb. 7 and contractor should be selected for the transport department by July, 1973. The phased JETS program will eventually lead to a fully-automated system in which Ihe human air traffic controllers will be left to make the critical decisions while the computers do the hum-drum calculations and provide the vital information for the traffic controllers. JETS initially will main "enroule" control Gander, Moncton, Montreal, Winnipeg, Edmonton and and the two largest "terminal" control centres at Montreal and Toronto. For the "enroute" aircraft surveillance, JETS will literally broaden the radar vision of air traffic controllers and provide blanket coverage of air traffic corridors in southern Canada and parts of northern will bring into Canada's air civilian air traffic surveillance system a number of distant civilian and military radar units that are not used today. In addition, JETS will allow air traffic controllers to pick up, via telephone links, radar signals from nearby, smaller air traffic control centres. All together, this will permit mich more complete control of aircraft travelling between traffic control centres. Computers at the enroute centres will process the radar data from various sites and steer tho information to the air traffic controllers who need it. The computers will also process such things as flight plans (so controllers can be notified when a plane is supposed to enter his sector) and identification, altitude and positional information obtained from special trasmiUing devices on larger aircraft. All of this Information will then be displayed at the controllers's request on his television type screen. For the two "terminal" centres, JETS will permit greaUf accuracy in identifying awl positioning aircraft In ttw h i g h I y-congested air space above the main airports at the two cities. Subsequent phases of increase the sophistication of the computer absitanee. For example, the computers will eventually automatically calculate possible collision courses between aircraft and flash a warning to the controller; will automatically determine where planes should be based on their flight plan; end perhaps even calculate, in a terminal area, the best order for planes to land and take-off.
