Clareuholm, Nov. 27, Kditor Herald, Sir Tuesday, the 24th .tike residents or Glares holm voted tho issue of Local Option, which the climax of a etreuuous campaign carried; on for over two weeks by both forces. The temper auce forces wsre well Moral Temperance Beform working energetically in conjunction with the W.- C. T. U; and Presbyter ian and Methodist churches in the town. Three large aud enthusiastic public meetings were held, addressee by Rev. H. S. Magee, Dominion Sec Moral fa Temperance Beform League Rev.-A. W.-Coone of Calgary and Rev. W.G.W. ,Fortune, Provincia Secretary oi the Moral and Temper ance Reform League. Each speaker dealt forcibly with the great and growing evil of the open bar roon and public-treating system, and witl Local Option as the first great step towards prohibition, the gqal of al temperance effort, emphasing the point that the quarrel w as' not w itl the saloon keeper who Is do'ing a le- gitimate business the man who licenses and makes legitimate this life destroying traffic. A citi- zens' meeting, at which" some ten prominent business men took part and expressed themselves heartily in favor of Local Option for business reasons, .was 'also largely attended. The "liquor were represent- ed by: the of the J icensed Victuallers' Association, who was on the ground during the whole of the campaign but who failed to meet the sound, convincing argument from the platform, the press or elsewhere. On account of the two-thirds ma- jority the Local Optionists recognized from the first that they had a stiff; uphill fight in front of them and how they succeeded may be evidenced by the polls show- ing 91 for local option, 97 against. Moreover every local _ option vote Was clean, several forfeiting their vote rather than take oath against con- science, a fact which was universally conceded by the anti-local optionists who would be glad to have as clean and honest a record at Tuesday's poll, the trial of one of the several sus- pected cases of perjury being called for Saturday before Inspector Cam- ies. Another very encouraging feature of the campaign was the splendid stand taken by the young manhood of the town, _ in this great issue, for a sober" town. While the temperance! forces deplore the seeming defeat of their efforts they are by no means! discouraged but rejoice to' have hadi an opportunity 'to raise their voice! record their vote against such a menance, to our town and certainly never, intend to relax their efforts untiL, this is removed, being more united than ever in their conviction that the economic., sociaL moral and spiritual interests of the town are be- ing endangered so long as the insidi- ous influences .of the bar exists. The great wave of prohibition, is westward and we look forward to a not distant day when another op- portunity will be ours to repeat the effort.. "In the meantime this ccurag- eous attempt has been a decided gain and not a loss to. temperance senti- ment and purpose and we have rea- son-to be proud of the 91 men in first "in our to stand up in a Local Option cam- paign and say in.the face of a stren- uous opposition, "This evil must be voted out."
