SPOTLIGHT Hoist centennial Gustav Hoist, the British composer whose memory is best preserved around the world by his famous orchestral suite, The Planets, is revealed to have made even greater contributions to music, in a CBC Tuesday Night documentary Dec. 3 on CBC radio. Gustav Hoist: Planet Maker was prepared in honor of the composer's centennial by writer and critic Kenneth Winters and producer Jeffrey Anderson. For listeners in CBC-FM regions, a stereo presentation is available Dec. 5 on Encore. During a visit to London earlier this year, Anderson interviewed a number of musical luminaries about Hoist for the hour long documentary. Dr. Edmund Rubbra, the eminent symphonist and a former student with Hoist, is also heard, along with music commentators John Warrack and Donald Mitchell. Included is a recorded tribute to Hoist by Ralph Vaughan Williams made for the BBC shortly before Vaughan Williams' death in 1958. The Selfish Giant The heartwarming magical fable of The Selfish Giant, written by Oscar Wilde, receives an encore presentation on the CTV television network, December 5. As delightful now as when it first appeared in 1888, the story is a poem- in prose. The film follows the story of the Giant returning to his home after many years absence to find his gar- den being used by schoolchildren. He chases them away with huge walls and fiercesome signs, but for his selfish act Spring deserts the garden leaving it ravaged by the Snow, the Frost and the Fierce North Wind. Only when the children discover a break in the wall and creep back to play, does Life return to the Giant's garden. Christmas stranger Legend has it that every Christmas the angel who appeared to the shepherds near Bethlehem returns to earth. He comes to listen to the carols echoing his message of so many years before. This is the setting for the premiere presenta- tion of The Christmas Messenger on the CTV television network, airing December 6. A young boy remembers the previous Christ- mas Eve when, unintentionally, he disturbs a stranger listening to the carol singers in the street The stranger, it seemed, had been waiting for the boy and together they follow the singing children through the village. During the evening, the carols took on far more meaning for the boy than they ever had before. When the time came to part he almost missed the stranger's true identity.
