The association's previous two-year contract with the covering such matters as pre-season and post-season pay and player ex- pired on Grey Cup last Sunday. Reed said the association hopes to begin negotiations with the league prior to the CFL general managers' meeting in February. SEEK CHANGES The Saskatchewan Rough- rider all-star running back said the association will be seeking improved player benefits as well as increased player rosters and a firmer commitment regarding availability of players for the association's annual all-star game. The association has made previous representations to the league about increasing the rosters by at least one Canadian. talked to them about this at our meeting in Hamilton last April and they said they would consider it and get back to us but we have not heard from CFL -clubs currently are allowed to dress 17 Canadians and 15 imports for each with the 15th import relegated to the bench as the He is allowed to play in the game as a replacement for another im- port who then becomes ineligi- ble for further play except if the player replaced is a quarterback. 36-PLAYER ROSTERS We're talking in the neighborhood of 36 ball said Reed. like to see an increase of three Canadians and one American plus the designated import rule eliminated. like to see that rule eliminated because we think it's awful foolish to pay a dress him for a game and have him sit Reed said the fact that all CFL clubs pay extra players to remain so- called that the clubs could afford four more players on the roster. big gripe has always been that it would cost too much to add extra ball players to the but they have demonstrated to us that they are willing to spend unlimited amounts of money to have taxi squads. think it's time we in- creased the roster and then maybe we could keep another good running back around and then you don't have to go out and hunt for somebody or go around in the bushes all the time when you need a re- WFL A THREAT Reed said the association it- self has had no direct contact with the WFL which has an- nounced it expects to start operations next season in several North American cities and will be competing with the CFL and National Football League for player talent. I can't say that some of the ball players may not have been approached by WFL Reed added. Gerry Paterson of CFLPA executive said in an interview that he knows of seven CFL players who have been approached by the new league. Paterson said there are 11 CFL players and 86 in the NFL who this year played out their options and would be available. Minor hockey Mike Craig scored goals for the Red Wings as they blanked the Oilers 2-0 in Bantam A ac- tion. The shutout was snared by Scott Young and Larry Campbell. In another Bantam A en- counter the Marlands and Canadiens were stride for stride in a 3-3 tie. Each club scored once in each period. Steve with and Brian Kanewischer scored for the Marlands while Brad Pat McCune.and Brent Montieth replied for the Canadiens.
