Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - November 27, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta Ask Andy BABY KANGAROOS Andy sends a complete 20- volume set at the Merit Students Encyclopedia to Rich age of for his How big it baby The story of the baby kangaroo is downright remarkable and somewhat hard to believe. Chances his whopping mother stands more than five feet tall and tips- the scales at about 175 pounds You would expect such a large lady to bear a baby that weighs at least a few pounds. Not at all. A nor- mal newborn kangaroo weighs much less than an ounce. As we mammal animals give birth to live babies and nurse them on mother's milk. we are is the most advanced form of childbirth in the animal world. Baby birds develop inside eggs that may be stolen from the nest. Mam- mal babies have a better chance because they develop inside the mother's body This pre-birth growing stage is called the gestation period. The gestation period varies in different mammal species. A lady lion gives birth to her furry cubs about 110 days after mating. A litter of helpless little mice is born after about two weeks and the gestation period for an elephant is 21 months Longer gestation periods give a baby animal a better chance to develop. The early mammal of 60 million years or so had very short gestation periods Their newborn infants were blind and naked and com- pletely helpless. In those we are many mammal mothers solved this problem built-in baby carriages. They were marsupial mam- mals with cozy pouches where their helpless little babies were nurses and protected. gestation for most mammals became longer and the newborn babes were stronger and not so helpless In most parts of the world marsupial pouches went out of style. But not in home of the kangaroo. The male great grey kangaroo is called Boomer. This bouncing beauty stands at least six feet tall and weighs about 200 pounds. The female is called Flier and though quite a bit smaller than the she also is a whopper. The baby kangaroo is born only four or five weeks after mating. as you would expect he is a helpless midget The blind and naked baby is about three quarters of an inch long. His body is no thicker than a pencil and its total weight is about one thirty-fifth of an ounce. in three minutes he manages to scramble from his birth through his mothers shaggy fur and into the cozy fur-lined pouch on her tummy. There the amazing baby at- taches his hungry mouth to one of her milk faucets and hangs on Nobody hears a peep out of him for months. Mean- time he grows and opens his eyes and dons his fur coat. In this offspr- ing of Boomer and Flier is called Joey. After eight months he weighs about ten pounds. Soon he ventures forth on short trips but for at least another six months he returns to the pouch for safety and feeding. Your horoscope durtM by child- ren of Herald ahoiild malted to Aak P.O. Box. TAURUS 20-May Lawrence Lamb M.D. Dear Dr. Lamb I have only briefly tried both Dr. Atkins' diet and Dr. Stillman's Quick Loss Diet. I can readily understand how excess fats in Dr. Atkins' diet can be harm- ful. Having heard both doctors on the same TV talk show at the same I still fail to see where Dr. Atkins' which does include two salads per day leaving off all fats would be more harmful than Dr. Stillman's diet which does not contain one gram of car- bohydrate I have not received satisfac- tory answers to this question from either my husband's physician or my own. We are both very much overweight and only seem to be able to lose weight on a very low car- low high pro- tein diet. My husand has high blood pressure and many related problems Fun with figures By J. The first week of the Atkins' diet allows a salad for lunch and of loosely packed let- tuce or other similar roughage The amount is than one That means the total carbohydrates for the day would be less than four grams Dr Atkins refers to this as zero carbohydrate And I would consider that to be essentially a diet That doesn't mean I approve of it A properly planned low car- low high pro- tein diet to lose weight is all right Eliminating the means it is no longer the Atkins' diet The principle is to eliminate calories. The two main sources of calories are fats and sweets You can plan a diet that includes fresh lean meats that is sufficiently low in calories for safe and sensible weight control. The problem is that many high protein foods also contain a lot of fat. That is why fortified skim milk is good for such diets. It is a source of excellent protein and calcium without overloading the fat intake. Uncreamed cottage cheese is also in this category Dr Atkins opposes skim milk and recommends using thick which is not a good source of either calcium or protein.
