DON MacKAY Soil Science Head Lethbridge Research Station Soil testing is extremely useful in helping producers estimate more accurately tbe fertilizer requirement of Crops. In times of food shor- tages and good it can help to ensure max- imum yields. In times of surpluses and uncertain .it can help to reduce production costs. In these times of concern about it can help to prevent the accumula- tion of excess nutrients in our water systems. Contrary to popular soil tests do not measure the total nutrient content of soils. Rather they are designed to ex- tract from a small sample of by a quick chemical the total quan- tities of nutrients that will be available to crops dur- ing the entire growing season. Clearly this is a tall order. At the Lethbridge Research Station we do not provide a soil testing ser- vice for the public. soil tests are made in conjunction with all our fertilizer ex- periments so that the soil test results can be. com- pared' with the fertilizer response. The results of these experiments are then used by agrologists in provincial and commercial- laboratories as a basis for making fertilizer recommendations. There are many factors that affect the accuracy of predicting fertilizer re- quirements from soil tests. The most important is probably the sampling procedure. The cultivated layer of an acre of land contains about two million pounds of soil. one-pound sample that is sent to the laboratory is truly representative of the reliable results can- not be expected. particularly is certain ta influence the release of nutrients from the soil and to affect the.accuracy of the prediction.
