(CPS s youngster at the Les- ter B. Pearson day nursery drew a picture of Bryan Davies him a bosom and a skirl. Mr. Davies wasn't sur- prisird. As a male working in a day care ci-iitrc he expected there wouid ha some confusion in the chii'ircn's minds at first. "CMiaien leam the stereo- tvped image of teacher as wo- man and at first it was very strange for he said. "The children used to say 'Miss' instead of teacher; now they say our names." Bryan said the children seem to be adjusting well to their male teacher. "I'm not really a said Bryan, "I'm more like a guide." He explained that he tries to avoid fitting into traditional male roles, those of father fi- gure and authoritarian. He pre- the nursery last February, after dropping two subjects from his Trent University curriculum be- cause he wanted to apply what he was learning in educational psychology immediately. WORKED FOR DOLLAR He worked as a fall time volunteer for a dollar a day until June, when he was invited to become a full staff member. This year he is taking three fers the role of male friend. "A child can't use an ency- clopedia, so the function of day care teachers is to prorate an- swers to his questions in lan- guage and concepts the child said Bryan. "A parent often has too many other worries to pay attention to (lie e h i 1 d' s incessant questions. a question can be (lie last straw." Bryan became Interested to day 'care because he felt it would be challenging to work with cliildrer. "These yotmg ones are open and honest and easy to reach. They're uninhibited and eager to learn." PUTS DOWN MYTHS Bryan said the most reward- tog aspect of his work is being able to establish friendship with a child. "It's a myth thai women make belter teachers of young children, just as it's a myth that day care is baby-skiing. I think it's very important that young children have a male in- fluence at school too." He said many of his friends have begun to work with small children through the Trent Uni- versity Community Action pro- gram. "Many men say it's Die money that keeps them out of day care, but I don't think that's a valid complaint. I have plenty to live on and I'm learning a lot. Some- times you have to make a de- cision between job satisfaction and money. "The women teaching at the day nursery have made it the most natural tiling hi the world that I should work there, and they've teen very patient with my divided schedule." Bryan said he will continue working at the day nursery until lie finishes his tlurd year at Trent. Then he hopes to attend the Institute of Child Study in Toronto to upgrade his qualifi- cations in early childhood edu- cation.
