Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - November 24, 1972, Lethbridge, Alberta FAGS G Banjo player Maurice Bolyer regular with Tommy Hunter One of the world's best banjo players is a Canadian Mau- rice Bolyer of CBC-TV's The Tommy Hunter Show, seen to coast each Friday night at 9 p.m. Bolyer will be seen Dec. 1 when he played with the Tommy Hunter Show at the Kinmount Fair over the Labor Day weekend. How did Maurice get to be so good? It wasn't just talent alone. It was many years night after night at dance halls for practically notliing except free liquor, which he doesn't drink, and a little money. Barely enough mcr.ey to keep him and his wife going. But let's begin at the begin- nirg. Maurice Beaulieu (Bolyer is his professional name) was born in Edmunston, N.B., De- cember 1, 1920. His first lan- guage was French since his people were Acadians. and he still" carries a noticeable accent even today. He learned to speak English after he met his wife, the former Eveline Davis In Toronto in 1947. Why wait? A.M.A. Travel Ser- vice could get us airline tickets faster, at no extra charge! He says that "a few years later, I would try to play with woollen mitts on, and also cov ering the keyboard with sheet. The reason I would do that is because I would receive dimes and quarters from some uncles ol mine, or some pass ing salesman." By the time he was 18, Mau- rice was playing the piano, vio- lin, guitar, bass, accordian mandolin, harmonica and play- ed in a small western band "The fellows wanted someone to play the banjo in the bane and they wanted me to learn it I said 'why me? I don't like the banjo.' But they insisted saying that since I could play everything else, I was a nat ural for the banjo. Maybe they were says Maurice with a grin. In 1942, Maurice played regu larly in a group with Hank Snow over radio station CKCW That was the time Maurice die his first multiple recording, a technique used by Les Pau some 10 years later. While in Moncton, Maurice's group needed a female singer Marg Osbume won the job. She i later went on to star with the }on Messer Show on radio and elevirion. During a short visit to To- cnto, Maurice met Eveline Da- up on vacation at Christ- nas time from her native Day- ona Beach, Florida. "We fell in o v e. Eveline changed my .vhole life, my music career, my finances and even got me on the Arthur Godfrey Show r.d the Lawrence Welk Show." "We moved to Montreal, and inally, Hamilton, where Gordie Papp the host of Ti radio how callscl Main Street Jam- jorcc. That's where Gordie and me became good friends and lavo been ever since. and J moved to Toronto after hat for CBC television's series Country Hoedown and Eveline and me never had to fear going mngry From Country Kosdown I w e n t with Tommy lunter and have worked with Tommy over since. It's funny, mt I can remember when Tom was a thin stringbean of a kid, 7 years old, who hitchhiked to in the winter without any overcoat, carrying his gui- tar without any case. He couldn't afford a case. "Anyway, Eveline and I had a family, a boy and a girl. Both are now married, and Laura, my girl has given us a grand- son, whom we love very much. ['ve played nearly all over Eu- rope and the Middle East, for our troops Egypt, Gaza, Cy- prus, France, Germany. I've also played with Peewee Hunt and Victor Borge and in nearly every big concert hall and small town in Canada. Thai 'barking dog' of a banjo has been good to me."
