The tour is part of a flood of exchange visits since the estab- lishment two years ago of diplo- matic relations with China and the thaw in U.S.-China rela- tions. Tlie new warmth in relations between China and the Western hemisphere, and China's desire to turn the warmth into friend- ship, lies behind the two-month tour by the acrobats of the Americas. The visit to four Canadian cities developed from a request by External Affairs Minister Mitchell Sharp, who was enter- tained by traditional acrobats during a visit to Peking in Au- gust. Originally planned to take in most of Canada, the visit was curtailed to Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City and Toronto when the tour was advanced to hit U.S. centres at the Christmas season. After four nights at the Na- tional Arts Centre here, the 76- strong by Chi- nese reporters, photographers and a film Nov. 30-Dec. 3 in Montreal, Dec. 7-9 in Quebec City and Dec. 12 and 13 in Toronto. After that, it's Indianapolis, Chicago and New York, then Mexico, Peru and Chile in the New Year. A crew of Peking television reporters and cameramen from the Chinese government's cen- tral documentary film bureau were on hand at a rehearsal Tuesday night to record the wide-eyed and open mouthed gasps of appreciation from an audience of about 250. The Chinese invited employ- ees of the arts centre, the hotel where they are staying and their families to preview the fact, anyone they had befriended since their ar- rival in Ottawa Saturday BASED ON LIFE As well as a display of highly developed acrobats and balanc- ing jugglers, magicians and truck the show is a reflection of the popular arts in modern-day China. Each act is evolved from some aspect of everyday life- folk dances, street games, flow- ers of friendship, plate-spinning and a number of displays of balance and dexterity. Acrobatlcs in China is an an- cient and popular art, held in high esteem.
