Poseidon Adventure tops Godfather in TV ratings NEW YORK (AP) The first segment of the movie The Godfather, televised by NBC Saturday night, was easi- ly last week's most-watched television program in the United States, A. C. Nielsen ratings figures show. But the 1972 box office hit, seen in more than 25-million homes, still didn't draw as many viewers as expected, NBC officials said. It failed to exceed the ratings for ABC's Oct. 27 showing of The Poseidon Adventure, the season's highest-rated theatrical movie on U.S. TV. That broad- cast was seen in an estimated 27-million homes. NBC broadcast the second segment of The Godfather Monday, but Nielsen ratings on it won't be available until next week. The Godfather was shown in a single unit in Ontario two weeks ago. NBC paid a record million for the right to show the movie once on TV, said the film's maker; Paramount Pic- tures. Nielsen ratings for the week Publishers9 seek Trudeau memoirs OTTAWA (CP) With the contract for former prime minister John Diefenbaker's memoirs safely signed, The Macmillan Co. of Canada is aiming at a similar agree- ment with Prime Minister Trudeau. Hugh Kane, vice chairman of the Macmillan board, said in an interview after Mr. Diefenbaker had signed his contract that it was the first signed by the firm to publish prime ministerial memoirs. But, he said, the firm hoped to publish Mr. Trudeau's memoirs because it had published an earlier book by him in 1968, Federalism and the French Canadian. Grandfather to attempt balloon trip LONDON (Reuter) An American grand- father who wants to become the first man to cross the Atlantic in a hot air balloon said to- day his chances of success are better than 90 per cent. Malcolm Forbes, 55, who last year became the first man to cross the United States in a hot air balloon, told a mass conference here "it's no more dan- gerous than trying to cross a street in New York." Forbes, editor of Forbes Magazine, add- ed that his wife was less than enthusiastic about the project, "but if you're in ballooning this is the ultimate trip." Forbes said he would be accompanied by scientist Dr. Thomas Heinsheimer on the flight, planned to begin Dec. 30 from southern California. The two expect to land in southern France or northern Africa but Forbes said London's Heathrow Airport also is a possibility. He es- timated the duration of the flight at between four and seven days.
