Elton John emerged as one of the most phenomenal performers and record makers in rock music Seven of his eight albums have won platinum awards for more than a millions sales, while his singles knock the top oft the charts every time. On a three-month tour of North America, he performed Ins tinst Canadian date Sunday night to a capacity crowd at the Forum. His popularity here was confirmed three weeks ago when more than tickets were sold within four hours after the box office opened. The 27-year-old British star's songs included Funeral For A Friend. Benny And The Jets, Daniel, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Get Back Copycat and Don't Let The Sun Shine Down On You. The success of Elton John was sparked when he joined forces with lyricist Bernie Taupin at the end of the 1960s, after spending innumerable long, hard nights as Reg Dwight playing with the "not so good" rock and roll band Ciuesology on the London cir- cuit A millionaire many times over. Elton recently signed the biggest record contract in rock music history with MCA. Gould, formerly the hus- band of singer actress Barbra Streisand, married Miss Bogart in Las Vegas in December, 1973, after the birth of their two children. MOSCOW (AP) Cana- dian jazz pianist Oscar' Peterson broke off a concert tour of the Soviet Union Tues- day because he did not feel he was getting the proper treat- ment and left for the airport, the Canadian embassy said. LONG DISPUTE He departed only a few hours before the Oscar Peterson Trio was due to open in Moscow, apparently after a long dispute about hotel ac- commodations and other con- ditions of the tour. The Canadian embassy would not say much beyond confirming Peterson had left to fly to Helsinki, Finland, and Copenhagen, Denmark. The embassy reported that Peterson said he would not discuss his reasons for leaving until he returned to Canada on Dec 10. The tour was part of a Cana- dian Soviet cultural ex- change agreement. Laine, 32, collected only 50 francs for winning the prize Monday, but the prestige attached to it assures the winning book of a huge boost in sales. The Prix Renaudot, another major literary prize, went to Swiss writer George Borgeaud for his novel Le Voyage a L'Etranger (The Foreign Journey) which took 10 vears to write.
