HOLLYWOOD (AP) Mac Benoff, 57, an Emmy-winning television writer who got his start by creating the radio show Duffy's Tavern, died in hospital Thursday. Benoff had been working on a screenplay based on the court martial of Lieut. William Cal- Icy, convicted in the My Lai massacre. A native of New York, Benoff wrote screenplays for Take ft or Leave It and Hollywood Can- teen, and did scripts for radio's Baby Snooks Show. In the 1950s, Benoff moved to TV writing, creating the comic character Danny Thomas por- trayed for many years on his series Make Room for Daddy. Benoff won two Emmies for his writing on that show. They said amanita phal- loides, also known as the "death cup" or "destroying an- gel" mushroom, is popping up in great numbers in the area because of heavy rains.
