On index, industrials were Ban upheld on handling of sulphur VANCOUVER (CP) - A ban on the bulk handling of sulphur on the north shore of Vancouver harbor, imposed by the city of North Vancouver, was upheld Wednesday by Mr. Justice T. A. Dohm in British Columbia Supreme Court. The judge dismissed an application by Neptune Terminals Ltd. to quash a bylaw amendment that excludes "bulk storage or bulk handling of sulphur" from industrial uses permitted on the foreshore of Bur-rard Inlet. Neptune claimed the city had no power to enact the amendment and that it discriminated against the company. Neptune operates the only bulk loading and storage facilities on the foreshore, handling mainly coal and potash. Beef futures WINNIPEG (CP) - Trading volume was light Wednesday at the Winnipeg live beef futures market with commission houses on both sides of the market. Tuesday's contracts totalled 11. HEAVY TRADE MONTREAL (CP) - Prices were lower in all sectors except papers, which recovered today from a yearly low Wednesday, in heavy trading on the Montreal stock market. Dumont Nickel Mines gained 39 cents to $1.14 on a volume of 935,000 shares after Wednesday's announcement by the company of a nickel deposit north of Val d'Or it described as-possibly the largest single deposit discovered in the history of Canadian mining-a potential estimated at 4,000 million tons. Denison Mines did not trade after reporting net income of $6,091,000 or $1.36 a share for the first nine months, down from $10,163,000 or $2.27 in the corresponding period last year. CPR lost Vz to $6iy4, International Nickel Vz to $46%, Noranda % to $26V8, Algoma Steel V* to $12% and Bell Canada Vi to $44% QSP Ltd. rose % to $18%, Du Pont % to $14, Northern and Central Gas % to $13%, Husky 011 % to $12%, TransCanada PipeLines % to $32y4 and Dominion Glass Vi to $13%. On index, papers were up .42 to 81.26 while industrials fell .59 to 165.57, banks .55 to 166.24, utilities .36 to 139.43 and the composite index .55 to 161.19. Volume to 11 a.m. was 1.16 million shares. PRICES SLIP NEW YORK (AP) - The stock market showed indications of firming in slow trading early this afternoon. Prices slipped at the opening but recovered somewhat around mid-day, displaying considerably more strength than on Wednesday. At noon the Dow Jones average of 30 industrials had edged up 0.48 to 754.72. Declines led advances by about 150 among issues traded on the New York Stock Exchange. Mclntyre Porcupine lost 1% to $148% among Canadian issues, while Walker Gooderham dropped % to $41% and Inco % to $45]/4. Gainers included Distillers Seagrams up % to $47, Dome Mines up % to $63 and Granby Mining up Vi to $22y4. On the American Stock Exchange, Brascan rose % to $14V4 and Molybdenite lost Va to $4.38. Flax had a fair exporter buying and only thin hedge offerings that left all futures advanced. There was good exporter scale-down buying in rye but prices were slightly lower. Rapeseed futures were moving in both directions on light trading that consisted of heavy hedge offerings and light exporter buying. Extraordinary lasses, partly rseulting from the freeing of the Canadian dollar, reduced the company's profit. Operating profit before extraordinary items was $1,362,108 or 22.5 cents a share for the nine-month period this year. The items included a loss of $230,625 from the unpegging of the dollar and provision of $282,-026 for a loss relating to "the apparent unsatisfactory financial position of the sub - lessee of an aircraft from the company." Cash flow was $2,117,432 or 35 cents a share in 1970 to $1,374,-868 or 25 cents a share for the nine-month period last year. absorbed the wheat board hedge offerings.
