There 'will not be an interest In Cavdntoit that will not benefit by the project- It will be remembered that for some time, Martin Wolte, MjP.P., has been working to have supplies and equip- ment for the U. S. Reclamation De- partment, shipped via Coutts and Stirling to Cardston, and hauled' from here to Babb, Montana, the headquar- 1 ters of the big irrigation scheme, which tats been started ia the north- ern part of the State. The Cards ton member interviewed the U. S. people, and found them to be agreeable to ship this way, if sat- isfactory arrangenvents could be made as to roads, bridges, etc., between Cardatori and Babb, and a reasonable freight rate secured from the C. P. Ft. -Mr. Wolfe immediately pot busy, and had the Deputy Minister of Pub- lic Works authorize the expenditure of for the improvement of the traffic road over which the material will be hauled. The Board of Trade united in approach ing the C. P. R. about freight rates, and at last, after veral weeks of corresponding and interviewing officials the matter has been satisfactorily arranged, and the liOOO wid cars of Freight for Babb win be unloaded at Cardston; Travelling Freight Agent Hollymau, of .the C. P. R., was present at the meeting, and reported that the Re- clamation service had agreed, through their legal adviser, Mr. Roddis.: (o pay a flat rate fxom Coutls to Card- ston. track for unloading flic material was taken up, and Mr. Jlollyman said the C. P, 11. .'would likely furnish the ma terial. Since ihe meeting a telephone conversation from Mediciim Ilai in forms the secretary of the Hoard that the railway company will build ilie spur at a cost of 75 cents per foot for putting the material together, if the Board wllr do the grading. This tho Hoard of Trade has decided to do. and already an acre of ground has ueei leased from the Milling Co. for this purpose. folly man and Mr. Wolfe dis- agreed the possibility of hauling from on the 0. 11., with- out touching Canadian poll. The C. P. R. official made the statement that the Reclamation people 'were com pel led to ship through Canada. This probably explains why the C. P. R. seemed indifferent about, going after ihe business. Mr. however, had facts which assured him that it was quite possible to haul from Brown ning to Babb, even though the dis- tance was double, and it would re- quire concessions of some sort to bring the traffic through Cardston. The Board Js, to ask from the Re- clamation service a guarantee of the amount of freight thai will bo hand- led, and the Board in turn 'will guar- antee 350 feet of trackage. An immense amount of stuff will be required for the work. Mr. Woolf stated that the figures handed to him provided for pounds of steel in rods and pipes; pounds of cement; SOO tons of coal, besides fod- der, reinforcing steel, provisions, two steam- shovels and living equipment for three years' work. The United States government, Mr. Woolf said, have appropriated for the work and of this sum is now in the bank at Helena, Montana, ready to be.drawn upon. An electric power plant to cost will be built and as soon as this is complet- ed electric power will .be used for rivetting, driving steam shovels, etc. The project looms large with the board and tu their efforts to secure the business they have the hearty co-operation of the entire town.
