Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - November 18, 1971, Lethbridge, Alberta iTV ends 66- year career ON THAMES, England (AP) Dame Gladys Cooper, a leading British actress whoso career spanned UC years, died at her horns in llcn-cy today after a 10-week She was SI Damp Gladys made her final appearance last April in a Lon-ton revival of The Chalk Gar-don, playing the role of Mrs. St. Maugham which she had created Jii years before. She was stricken in September with pneumonia and had been ill ever since. The cause of death was not announced. She mode her debut in Colchester in 1905 and came to London the next year, quickly establishing herself as one of. the great beauties of the era. She made her New York debut in 193-1 and played frequently there until her marriage in 19.17 to the actor Philip Merivale when she moved to Hollywood and played in several movies. But in the 1800s she re-umcd lo England to live, and in the Queen made her a Dame of the British Empire, (he Rrifish equivalent of knighthood. She was marned three times, to II. J.
