Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - November 17, 1972, Lethbridge, Alberta PAG; 2 The Mackenzie it feasible? For CBC-TV's Tuesday Night series, writer broadc aster John David Hamilton and pro- ducer Garth Price last summer travelled the route of the pro- posed Mackenzie Highway to try and find out if the mil- lion project is feasible, and eco- nomically and environmentally practical. The color film documentary they made, the Mackenzie Road, will be telecast on the Tuesday Night series, November 21 at 10 p.m. Ottawa's decision last spring to complete the highway from Fort Simpson to Tuktoyaktuk has perhaps the most far-reach- ing i mpli c ations of any move thus far to open up Canada's Arctic north. By 1975, the year of completion, the highway will spur oil and mineral develop- ment, pipelines, a tourist trade and all that industrial exploita- tion implies. For good or ill, the road will create new com- munities, industries and busi- nesses. Many white residents of the north welcome the highway, al- ready open from Edmonfo-i to Fort Simnson, as a boon that will pull down supply prices and link the isolated communities of the far north. Some whites, and many Eskimos and Indians see the rond as a threat to their way of life. The Tuesday Night crew pho- tographed sketches of the Dempster Road, which now ex- ists linking the Yukon with the Arctic Ocean. They found that roads, built of silt Cin the ab- sence of gravel) tended to 'melt away" in summer, and lad to be rebuilt with a shale lase, wliich may not be much better. Hamilton visited the Macken- zie River countiy for the first ime during the building of the 5134 million Canol oil pipeline and road linking Norman Wells, and Whitehorse in the Yukon, That was during the Sec- ond World War, and today the route has been long since aban- doned as a total loss. Does the same fate await the Mackenzie Highway, or will it "hit the far north like a freight as one young Inuvik businessman nits it. In the documentary i aerial pinpoints some of PROPOSED NORTHERN HIGHWAY The Mackenzie Road, a CBC-TV Tuesday Night documentary looks at the route of the proposed highway through ihe Northwest Territories to the Arctic Ocean. It will be telecast Nov. 21 ot 10 p.m. Upper photo: This Fort Simpson-Hay River ferry across the Mackenzie carries one loaded truck at a time. The sassy, saucy, sexy Ger- aldine, first portrayed by Flip in a NBC-TV special is now featured frequently in his week- ly series. "Gcraldine is based on a little West .Indian girl I knew when I was a kid in Jersey City, New Flip re- ported. Geraldir.e's present voice, as created by Flip, was inspired by Butterfly McQueen's unfor- gettable characterization in "Gone With the Wind." Among Geraldine's less for- gettable lines are "The Devil made me do it" and "It ain't 'easy being worshipped, Honey." j "Geraldino, my Geraldine, is not a rclinetl lady." Flip ad- mitted. "But Geraldine is out- spoken. She is honest." Returning to the original Ger- aldine, he recalled: i "She lived on the same block I did, and her folks d'dn't have any more money than mine, but she was always dresred so neat and spic and span. And I was raggedy. j "I liked her but she I didn't like he added, look- I ing downcast. the wilderness communifies vis- ited. Hamilton talks with the people of the north, whites, In- dians and Eskimos and finds out that very few of the jobs on that part of the highway under construction are going to the native population. An original song, The Mac- kenzie Road, was written and performed in the film by Rob- ert Ruzicka, an Edmonton com- poser-folk singer. The Mackenzie Road was filmed at Whitehorse, Dawson City and the beginning of t h e Dempster Highway in the Yukon; also in such Northwest Territory communities as Inu- Aklavik, Ft McPherson, Fort Simpson, Yellowknife, Enterprise and Hay River.
