Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - November 16, 1972, Lethbridge, Alberta Thursday, November 16, 1972 _ THE IFTHBftlDGE HBtAIA 31 Research to benefit from Manitoba experiment Rats to over-run schoolhouse in the interests of science GUNTON, Man. (CP) An old brick schoolhouse, with its Mudent population long gone, toon will be over-run by rats, mice and guinea pigs. Henry Cerny is looking forward to it. Mr. Cerny, an employee in the University of Manitoba's de- partment of immunology where he is charged with handling of email animals used in scientific research, was a veterinarian when he left his native Czecho- slovakia Vk years ago. A veterinarian in Ostrava, a town on the Polish-Czechostova- kian border, is equivalent to a master of science in Canada, he said. "So I had to start some- thing else." With financial aid from the Manitoba Development Corp., Mr. Cerny has spent thousands of hours as well as dollars con- verting the old schoolhouse to the North American Laboratory Supply Co., scheduled to open in January. When he gets the operation in full swing, he expects to pro- duce mice, rats and guinea pigs for research each year. "I'm not trying to. push any- one out of business. It is a new field and I'm just working very hard." Mr. Cerny has spent consider- able time investigating animal laboratories in North America and is convinced his operation has "the most modern facilities available today." The crumbling plaster of the former school walls has been recovered with shiny white plas- tic. Staircases have been re- moved, windows replaced and a filter and sterilizing machine, to blow clean air throughout the building, added to the basement. Each room is controlled for temperature and pressure, mon- itored from a central console. Visitors to the building are re- quired to shower upon entering and don sterilized clothing. The building is designed to ac- commodate the various for breeding and keeping animals. "The different animals will always be kept said Mr. Corny. "There are some diseases that affect mice but not rats." In addition, Mr. Cerny has de- veloped his own food formula, and experimented with animal inbreeding. PART.
