Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - November 15, 1972, Lethbridge, Alberta CHARLOTTE WHITTON Doctors order Whitton to quit OTTAWA (CP) Charlotte Whitton, for 20 years an Ottawa politician, has quit municipal politics on doctor's orders. Miss Whitton, 76, has been in hospital since September when she broke a hip in a fall. Her cutting wit and public antics during five terms as mayor of Ottawa and several as alder- man attracted Miss Whiltton national attention.' r, Nov.mbtr If, THf LETHHIDOI HttALD 23 Canadian killed in violent European storm LONDON (CP) Europe is recovering from one of the worst storms In years with the loll of dead rising ID at least 63. Hundreds more were injured as howling winds ripped trees and smashed homes. As winds which had reached 160 miles an hour receded Tues- day, emergency action was launched in a number of cities to give shelter to the homeless. Dublin declared a full emer- gency to cope with widespread flooding. In the Welsh commu- nity of Port Talbot, more than 500 homes were flooded when the Alan River spilled over its banks. A distress fund was launched for the homeless and the town increased local taxes to provide more financial aid. The storm which swept in from the Atlantic Sunday night and spread from Britain to the Continent, killed at least 33 per- sons in West Germany, 18 in East Germany, three in Brit- a one in Belgium and one in France. The Canadian was Phyllis Da- vidson, 43, of Oshawa, Ont., crushed when a chimney blew down in Portsmouth. She was walking with her husband as they vacationed in the seaport community. SMASHES GIANT TENT Telephone lines were torn, highways littered with fallen trees and roofs ripped from many houses. In West Berlin, a tent housing a book exhibition was smashed and about books scattered by the winds. In Bremen, a metal sign torn from a hotel crashed into a crowded bus killing one passen- ger. The 27-man crew of the Chi- nese vessel Wane-hum was res- cued when the vessel ran aground north of Ijmuiden in tlie Netherlands. Firemen in Paris were called out frequently to deal with dam- aged roofs, chimneys and tele- vision aerials. Scaffolding at a building site near the centre of Paris threatened to collapse. The high winds and rain seemed to hit everywhere. In Lisbon, heavy fog caused a chain collision Monday on the express highway leading to the Tagus Bridge. Two ferry boats collided on the river. European port authorities re- ported ships broken from moor- ings. The pirate pop music sta- lion Radio North Sea, anchored off the Dutch coast, was forced to stop broadcasting for several hours when the storm damaged its aerials. The violent winds also de- stroyed the first blimp built in West Germany since the Second World War.
