Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - November 14, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta 10 THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD Thursday, November 14, 1974 Troop leave centre planned OTTAWA (l.'Pi Canadians on United Nations peacekeeping duties in Cyprus and the Middle Kast will soon have a leave centre where they occasionally may he join- ed by their wives. Announcement of proposals for the centre, possibly on the Mediterranean in Cyprus, was made in the Commons Wednesday by Defence Minister James Richardson. Mr. Richardson, was report- ing on his just-completed trip to visit the troops who number about The minister gave no in- dication of what plans the gov- ernment has to reduce the size of the Canadian contingent in Cyprus and he was strongly criticized by the opposition for the omission. Outside the Commons Mr. Richardson said the 950 mem- bers of the Canadian Airborne Regiment of Edmonton will be replaced by about 750 men of the Royal Canadian Regi- ment based in London, Ont. Michael Forrestal i PC Dartmouth-Halifax East) said he was expecting a fuller statement. The inflation-hit armed forces were ''getting damn some real prob- lems." Stuart Leggatt Westminster) said Mr. Richardson delivered a motherhood statement that had no information about the real problems of peacekeeping, such as the need for some proper backup support from the United Nations and other countries. ARE 950 ON CYPRUS Before he left, he said he FF i .outstanding is a Canadian TastE our classic example. HERITAGE HERITAGE would see if Canadian troops on Cyprus could be reduced. At present there are about 950 Canadians on Cyprus. He told the Commons Wednesday that he met the president'and vice-president of Cyprus, the deputy premier of Egypt and the defence ministers of Israel and Syria. He announced that flights by Canadian aircraft between Damascus and Beirut, stopped when a plane was shot down last August by Syria with the death of nine Canadians, will shortly resume. The minister said he found the morale of the troops high and added that the resumed flights will improve living conditions for the forces in Syria. Mr. Forrestall said there was nothing in the minister's statement to say whether the inflation-hit forces can fulfill their peacekeeping role. He mentioned current on forces ac- tivities and said there is not sufficient support for the men overseas. Prosecutors to sort out draft-dodger cases Rescuing baked goods Residents of Leduc rush the contents of the Leduc bakery out of the building before it is heavily damaged by a fire. The blaze destroyed two build- ings, causing in losses. Leduc is 15 miles south of Edmonton. WASHINGTON (Reuter) U.S. Attorney General William Saxbe ordered federal prosecutors Wednes- day to sort out the draft evasion cases in their files and drop those not worth prosecuting. Saxbe said it was unfair to keep a prospective defendant wondering if and when he might be put on trial. "These instructions are in furtherance of the spirit of President Ford's clemency The reason why it makes good sense to spend dollars for this new 19" color TV can be stated in two words: Sony Trinitron If you ask the people who now own a 15" or 17" Sony Trinitron, they'll tell you this: "THE ONLY WAY MY SONY COLOR PICTURE COULD GET BET- TER WOULD BE TO GET BIGGER." A person whose case is dismissed will be spared even this penalty. Saxbe instructed the 94 U.S. attorneys based throughout the country to review the cases immediately. Prosecutors with 250 or fewer cases were told to com- plete the evaluation by Dec. 11. while those with larger caseloads will have until Jan. 11. Until now. evaders' cases have been reviewed only on their request. Saxbe said the reversal was partly in recognition that many fugitive evaders are "highly suspicious of justice depart- ment motives" and unlikely to contact a U.S. attorney for fear of being arrested. If a prosecutor concludes a case should be dismissed, he is to take what the justice department announcement described as "ai! reasonable steps" to inform the man in question. Calgary unions at odds CALGARY .CP) Two locals of the Canadian Union of Public Employees are at odds over what one un- ion local says is harassment of outside workers by super- visors and foremen, members of another iocal of the union. Harley Home. CUPE regional representative, said another illegal strike rould be caused by the harassment of "utsidr- workers. ?vlr. Home said supervisors are setting rigid timetables for coffee breaks and quitting time, and are prodding the men to work faster to catch up on a backlog of work left by their three separate strike ac- tions. The 1.600 union members went back to work Tuesday after a four-day strike in defiance of an Alberta Supreme Court injunction ob- tained by the city which prohibits ail strike action until the rnntra'-t expires next year. spokesnuin ior CITY.
